Put a pile of horse poo in the bottom of the garden and they will go to that instead of you!

That is unless you smell more inviting to them than the horse poo!

Sorry, I don't get the joke?

I've used these on many occasions and the claim is true. If they step on the line you draw with the pen, they will die, and quickly.

used to keep reptiles, and I bred mice to feed them. Unsurprisingly the shed where I bred the mice stank, and drew flies liek a magnet. I went in there one day and the flies were so numerous that you could swing your hand thru the air and hit half a dozen even with your eyes shut.

I got the pen and sat and watched the flies. I noticed that they usually landed on the leading edges of the cages where the mice couldn't reach them.

So, I drew a line anong the edge of each cage and sat back and watched.

Within ten minutes the floor of the shed was black with dead flies, and there was only one left alive and that was flying around and bumping into walls.

As you say, I'm trying to help. To be honest if people aren't interested at looking at alternative ideas, it's not my problem.

Just like people complaining about the heat where they live. That too is usually easily solved, it's just that most people would rather bitch about something that get off their *rse and do something about it.

My mum has been eating garlic and she has not been bitten since eating it, the rest of the family don't go near her either, so it has an extra bonus.

Mine isn`t, have a look at some of the old Spanish houses, apparently they keep the mozzies away too.

Yeah, I would love to know the logic behind those bottles of water.

I see the bottles around the village. I think the flies see a magnified image and thinking its a larger predator stay away. The thought of bil sitting with his yellow marker pen for hours marking the flies landing patterns when there are so many beautiful things to do with your life here in Spain just gave me a chuckle.......Now we know what he did all those hours down in his shed, The rumours of him playing with another type of fly and a large porn stash are untrue.

Ahhh, sad to see you don't think about what I write.

You take the felt tip in your hand, walk into the room and observe the flies. See! They land on the edge of the glass lamp shade. Draw a line around the edge. See! They land on the plastic end caps of the flouro tubes. You can see the spots they make. Draw lines on the end caps.

Time taken, a minute or two, plus time spent cooling brain down from the fever pitch of observation.

(Or alternately you could keep the damn doors and windows SHUT during the day like sensible folk.)

If where you sit outside has no observable fly landing site, cut a few thin strips of yellow plastic and fix them in a sensible place. For example, use your Blue Peter training and construct a mobile.

Time spent drawing lines on mobile or plastic strip? Minimal.

As soon as the fly lands on the lines its life is measured in moments.

All that costs very little, and has an immediate effect. I can plainly see that there will be people who aren't capable of understanding how it works, or lack the basic training to draw a line with a felt tip pen.

Much easier to mock someone who suggests a solution than to actually do something about a problem.

Hell's teeth, I read too many posts on another board about people who had moved to Australia, and then been traumatised to find that Australia is HOT and has flies.

Imagine their surprise. Not one of them had bothered to get off their spreading *rses and do something about it. Why should they? That would, after all give them one thing less to complain about.

Round here, the neighbours hang a CD on a piece of string. It keeps the flies away.
The South African thing with the Rhino doo doo works. I bought one and soon had a large and revolting collection of dead moscas.

Hi, we used to use the old fashioned sticky fly papers. As I couldn’t get them here I made my own. Go to your local DIY and buy a roll of plastic about eighteen inches wide.
Cut of a length of about a yard and a half, coat very thickly with treacle and hang in the doorway. The effect is quite amazing.

Especially when someone bumps into them.

I'm puzzled. Why do you leave the doors open?

Don't forget, he was writing about a VAPONA INSECTICIDAL PEN which you can get in supermarkets, not an ordinary felt tip, think you didn't read ALL the original post.

Tried these (and yes you can get them in the chinese bazaars), whilst they catch thousands of flies, they don't seem to catch the b..gers that bite:curse:.

Plus, the delight is that when it's hot, flies can get off the tape and then they fly off, and land somewhere else in the house and stick fast there.

I have got to ask again.

Why, in the name of a thousand demons do people leave their doors open in the summer? Not only does it allow the flies in, it also raises the temp in the house so that the house is nice and warm at night so you then need air con.

Mike, thanks for pointing that out. Far too often people don't read what it is they are posting about.
