I know nothing about bullfighting but aren't they different things?
I say both - but if I say a spanish word I tend to say it with a spanish pronunciation
is one of those words an English invention then?

I dont really know, the answer to that.
The word matador means killer of bulls, so it is not an English invention as such.
But maybe its use in this way is, I have heard the words like, torero, toreador used when talking about the more famous ones.
I have never heard of Fran or Cayetano Rivera being called a matador.
torero, is used in the sporting scence.
I have a feeling that matador is considered a bit dodgy in bullfighting circles.
Considering the word matadero= slaghterhouse, I can see why.
I suppose it is like calling a boxer, a scrapper or beater upper.
I maybe wrong because I am not the least bit interesed in bullfighting.
