Leaving Spain ?
As it happens ,
daily I read in the other languages' media ( German , French etc ) that , reportedly , so many north-Europeans really are struggling to offload their properties and get "the hellouttathere" ....and I am discussing in particular the Dutch , the Belgians , the Germans , the Swiss and the Skandies , besides some of the ( obvious ) Brits ; - now , what with all the encouraging new measures to stimulate the Spanish economy , even the latest news re : abolition of wealth tax : why , pray , does anyone think would quite so many , of allsorts , be so prompted to want to pack-up & leave in a hurry ? Many thanxxxx in advance for all your valued comments and opinions , R. in Bru |

The bottom line is some people cannot exist without the safety net that the UK provides. It's not a case of Spain is bad, because it's a great life here for the right type of person, it's more a case of the majority of these boneheads should never have come here in the first place. They'd have been more suited to taking a day trip to Skegness while playing "Viva Espana" on the car stereo! And you know the irony of all this? They go back to the UK and it's always wonderful for them. They're too stupid to realise that if it was so bloody wonderful why did they ever leave in the first place? All you budding entrepreneurs out there sit up and take note.....there's a great business opportunity here! Set up a stall at every airport selling T shirts to the returning masses....all emblazoned with the motif....."Been to Spain....Bought the T shirt...and F@CKED UP!" |

You can blame the Spanish for not liking you, the Brits for not supporting you.....in fact you can even blame Mitzyboy's ponytail if you're running out of excuses. But the fact remains if you come to the table with an empty plate then you're going to be found out. |

You here people say "oh I will just get a bar job if nothing else turns up" and look how many people are "just looking for bar work":eek: |

Re: Leaving Spain ?
Sorry to bang on about this, but I really think its the language thats the root problem, leading onto employment problems, and diff in getting a business of the ground:)
Personally Im inclined to agree with Extreme.:) With reagard to the lack of a safety net, however, there is welfare, but it only lasts 6mths,more than long enough to get a job,(if you have the language):) |

my friend who at the time had lived here for 15 years and was fluent struggled to get a job :( which really surprised me, took her months and months and then when she did get a job it was miles away and crappy hours |
Re: Leaving Spain ?
Unfortunatly have no sympathy for illegal workers, either in GB,or Spain, they should pay in like the rest of us if they want the benefits:)

Re: Leaving Spain ?
I think for the Germans there has been a substantial tax problem that has forced an awful lot of them to sell. Something about the Spanish authorities informing the German govt about who has what. Not researched it so I don't know the full story.
As far as I'm aware that is the only nationality that is leaving en masse. I suppose for the rest of them, UK especially, it's easy on a slow news day to dig out some migration figures (200,000 a year leave Spain shock!) without balancing it out the other way (210,000 a year go to Spain shock!). People are more migratory now than ever, which if you think about it is bound to happen in an age where air travel is cheaper than land travel, we have the internet, satellite tv and people far more willing to travel for a job. I do think that Xtreme should dismount his anti-brit hobby horse though as he's starting to come over all Victor Meldrew. ;) There's plenty fish to go around you know. Ste. |

Well, it's not the XTreme forum is it, when it becomes so, i'll get my coat.
Actually, X, you are very scathing and you make far too many assumptions. You assume that everyone who comes to Spain... or who leaves again fits a certain profile. Not everyone who comes to Spain does so for the weather, some come because they are highly paid, highly skilled and in demand, they are well travelled and are usually headhunted or relocated by their firms. The fact is that Spain does not live up to the standards of many other countries, in terms of social attitudes, road safety, building standards, value for money, shopping, private education, cleanliness of streets/beaches, etc. etc. I could go on. It's not news to anyone. But to imply that everyone goes back with their tails between their legs because they've f***ed up or that they're going back to their same old crap life is wrong. Some choose to return to their home countries or other countries because they just like them better... and you only live once don't you. |

Re: Leaving Spain ?
I know people who are forced to move back to the UK because their marriage broke up and they didn´t have the funds to carry on living in Spain without a husband supporting them and their children. Also people who have moved back because they have been sold illegal homes and have no electricity.

The problem with people today is nobody ever wants to accept responsibility for their actions or decisions. It's always the usual speech about the Spanish didn't like us, other Brits made our lives a misery, my kids weren't getting an education, my mother didn't love me yada yada yada. I came here at 51, had to learn a new language, and literally build my business up from nothing all over again. I pay my Nat Ins, taxes, IVA, and gestoria fees, and work seven days a week up to 100 hours....every week. And I wouldn't change things for the world! It's a great life here! |
Re: Leaving Spain ?
Its never as easy as that is it though Pete ..... with some people, things just get on top of them. Its difficult enough trying to survive in the Uk sometimes, not everyone is going to be able to hack it here with a different language etc. Imagine, you've had all your life to learn the system in the UK .... you come here and its all different .... its quite a thing for people to do, and its not always going to work out

And for those who don't know me......I'm 54 next week, my hair regularly varies between grey and orange, I have a mad donkey, I'm crap in the sack, and I'm Welsh! So against those odds....if I can do it, anybody can! |

I'm ripping into the Brits who go back and then blame everybody else for their situation. Spain isn't for everybody......some people will fit in and others won't. In our case, we got here when I was 51 and the wife was 43....and instantly we felt as if we'd come home. It's very difficult to explain, but for the first time in our lives we felt we were where we were supposed to be. We'd lived in many places in the UK and never fitted in or felt comfortable (even with the people)....it was like something was missing in our lives, but we didn't know exactly what. We stepped onto Spanish soil for the first time in our lives on November 2nd 2005 and we both experienced a sort of inner realisation that this was the final piece of the puzzle that we'd been searching for all our lives. Sounds bizarre I know.....but it hit us both straight away. Maybe it's the Gypsy in our blood (we both had Roma grandmothers)....but we just knew Spain was home. And after a journey that lasted a lifetime we'd finally found our way home. |
