What they are looking for is that you will not arrive and be a burden on the State, the interpretation of what constitutes that does seem to vary but normally a monthly pension and/or a decent credit card limit will suffice. It only gets more complicated if you are applying for Spanish citizenship when they will want to trawl your last year's bank accounts and so on

You will never find a definite amount written down as the law specifically prevents that. It will be based on your personal circumstance and where you are applying. €6000 seems to be a typical figure.

This is a translation of the relevant part of the Residency law.

Provision of sufficient resources for themselves and for members of his family not to become a burden on the welfare of Spain during their period of residence. Accreditation of possession of sufficient resources, whether by regular income, including income from work or other, or from holding assets shall be carried out by any evidence allowed by law, such as titles, certified checks , supporting documentation for obtaining capital income or credit cards, bringing in the latter case an updated bank certificate stating the amount of credit available on the card said. The assessment of sufficient resources must be made on an individual basis, and in any case, taking into account the personal and family situation of the applicant. sufficient accreditation for compliance with this requirement shall be considered resource tenure that are higher than the amount that each year set the Law on State Budget for generating the right to receive a non-contributory benefit, taking into account the personal and family circumstances interested.

Thanks Fred

I also wanted to ask another thing regarding this (from Neptuno):
"After a year you may be able to pay into the Spanish NHS at 60 euros per person per month"
So what it means? after a year of paying private insurance, does it entitle me to move to the Spanish government healthcare (of course with paying that 60/month)

We moved over here permanently 10 years ago so there were no official checks on income or savings. However, I heard that the mayor asked a Romanian family how they were going to maintain themselves so I asked why we were not subject to this too as I felt that they were being picked on. The answer from a person working in the town hall was that as we had set up standing orders for our bills the mayor was able to ask the bank manager. He could not ask the amounts but only asked for reassurance that he did not have to worry about us being a problem. Did not know how true this was but as I got to know the people involved I believed it.

There is a "Convenio especial" which allows to pay in and benefit from most aspects of the Spanish healthcare system and it costs Euro 60,- if you are under 65, Euro 157,- if you are over. However it does seem to vary from region to region and does exclude prescriptions

Yes, it is quite understandable that the personal and family situation should be taken into account - a family with 6 children is definitely not equal with a single person

The lights may seem a bazar question but as we couldn't find any in our two nearest towns I just thought id ask. Thank you to those who took the time to answer.

Actually a bazaar (of the Chinese variety) may be the answer to your bizarre question.
(sorry couldn't help myself )

So what it means? after a year of paying private insurance, does it entitle me automatically to move to the Spanish healthcare system with paying that 60/month?

Technically you shouldn't be on the Padron until you are a resident indeed many places require to see your residency before you can sign on the Padron

Other town halls try and encourage non-resident owners to sign up so boosting their numbers and increasing their grants from central government

Was this in reply to me? We are on the padron because as stated we moved to Spain two weeks ago so we are residents of the Oria district.

... so you've signed on the list of foreigners then (green form/card)?

Strangely, some places require padron before 'residencia'.

Not here, when one applies for residency, the office that deals with the application, (we don't have Policia National), send you to sign on the Padron and return with the document, to then continue the application for the green certificate.
