Vehicle insurance in the uk is not invalidated by having no MOT. Insurance once issued is validated untill notice is given by the insurer that it is not validated. It could be that if insurance company believe car is in unroadworthy condition etc they could decline to pay out fully comp for any damage to your own vehicle, but they must honour their 3rd party commitment.

But going directly to the ITV station is not a problem - quite allowable in Spain.

Can you quote the law on that? I have been told by ITV that if you fail the ITV and don't have it retested within the 30 day limit, then you must use a grua. Also was told that in theory, if you fail to renew your ITV, then once more you must use a grua.

It could of course be "local practice" but at the time I thought it was Spain wide.

It is the same,as the UK,if it's in a "roadworthy condition" you are covered third party.

It's actually 60 days and the law clearly states that you can drive it to and from the garage unless it is a dangerous failure.

La tarjeta ITV será devuelta al titular del vehículo o persona que lo haya presentado a la inspección, concediéndole un plazo inferior a
dos meses, contados desde la primera inspección, para la subsanación de los defectos y la presentación a nueva inspección en la
misma estación ITV. El vehículo inspeccionado quedará inhabilitado para la circulación por las vías públicas, excepto para su traslado al
taller y vuelta a la estación, o regularización de su situación, en su caso.

But surely if it hasn't passed the ITV those rules apply, but not if you have failed to present the vehicle in the first place?

That has nothing to do with the question I replied to.

If you fail to present your vehicle when the ITV is due, you are liable to a fine.

So if I'm not in Spain when the ITV is due, I am subject to a fine even if I get it done as soon as I return?

Also, as I said earlier, if the vehicle is undriveable due to an accident, I can be fined for not having an ITV?

There must be more to it than that.

I would imagine that is possible. I am in similar situation next year not knowing if when itv due I will be in Spain. I will look at getting it done when I am over a bit before itv is due all being well. UK system does seem fairer where by so long as MOT is booked you are ok for the journey to andc from test.

So long as you are driving to a pre-booked appointment at the ITV centre, you can drive without a valid ITV.
