In order to be classed as "true" high definition, we encode in at least 1280x720 resolution, or 720p. We use h.264 with a bit rate of 3.2Mbps and 192kbps audio, which means that streaming programmes in HD quality will put demands on your network connection. As such we recommend an internet connection fast enough to allow 3.2Mbps playback. Check your speed at our diagnostics page.

720p is the old "HD Ready" resolution which is not what I would accept as HD. I used to have a 720p TV but the present 1080i set is miles better. In fact I don't think you can buy a 720p TV any more.
Just try watching the BBCiPlayer HD stream on a 1080i TV and then compare it to the normal HD transmission.

I realise that there are some of you who can't survive without your ITV soaps.
IF and when ITV becomes unavailable by satellite. There's now a completely legal way for expats to keep viewing.

If anyone looses SatelliteTV and contemplating using internet TV (and they want top quality viewing), it's no good expecting your workhorse computer to produce good results! They are the reason for most of the moans on here!!!!!!
You either need an upgrade to a faster graphics card (mine's a £175 Radeon HD 7950 DD (that's not the dearest)), and a 6 or 8 core processor, or buy a Gaming desktop (they are built specificly for fast video!).
The excellent Novatech, near Portsmouth, U.K. sell easy to fit upgrade bundles which will do the job at a considerable saving.

Most expats in my area can't be bothered with giant satellite dishes and reading technical manuals to get their UK TV, one way or another you have to pay for the privilege anyway, so they pay a pirate supplier to provide them with what they want.
Without any messing about and just a tiny aerial on their roof they get a decent package for around 23 Euros a month. And if it goes wrong, a phone call to the engineers fixes the problem on the same day.

When the satellite goes I will be happy to pay for those things that I will miss.
