Its time for me to move on !
Hi . Its time for me to move to a nice warm climate and take on new challenges, maybe around the Alicante area or further away eg. the canaries .Or any good ideas of areas ?. My main field of work would be in sand/grit blasting or doing welding repairs,on a self employed basis. I do not need to earn a fortune as I have decent rental income in the uk .Regards to all: :D

As Concierge for the Spanish section of BE I would like to say hello and welcome.

The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums. So glad that you have said that you do not need to earn a fortune because to be perfectly honest with you Spain is having huge difficulties at present. Spanish people are finding it extremely hard to find work so anyone from other countries need to have excellent Spanish and be in the right place at the right time. Please let me know if you need any further help. Rosemary |

The work situation is bad in Spain and if you're self employed/autonomo you have to pay approx 250€ a month regardless of any earnings. But that said, if its just you, with no commitments or financial ties and you're getting enough rent to cover your expenses in Spain you might be able to get by???!!!! I guess it depends on how much your rent will provide you with Jo xxx |
Re: Its time for me to move on !
hi..I do have a sufficient uk income. I just want to do something different with my life. Do not want to work 5 days a week any more but i need to do something to keep myself sane and not get bored. Its the old story you know kids grown up . my partner is a qualified primary school teacher and she is starting to feel the same as me. I can turn my hand to most things .I does not have to be sand blasting or welding , its that the sand blasting was a very good number to be in. :-)

Re: Its time for me to move on !
Decide what your objectives are, make a plan and go for it.
Be prepared. It is difficult to anticipate the problems you will encounter. It can be very stressful living and working in a foreign country. Spain is not for everyone, many give up and go home for a variety of reasons. If you and your partner a glass half full people, it is better to look back and say I tried that rather than what if? |
Re: Its time for me to move on !
We moved to Spain thinking we would not need to work, but seem to work harder here then we did in the UK. We are quite lucky and work has found us. My husband has a good pension, but the extra helps pay for holidays and things. We have no regrets about moving to Spain, but would really like to sell up and return to the UK as grandchild number 3 is on the way, but the language school who we work for really don't want us to go as they use us for Residential stays for Spanish wanting the British experience, they want me to promise to sell to a Brit who will continue to work for them!!! A bit of a tall order LOL. There is work out there, but if you need an income it is hard, if not give it a try, you can always go back. At least you can say you tried it!!

Re: Its time for me to move on !
Go to the Canary Islands, the only area in Spain with decent weather.
It seems as if u want to chillout for a bit, so they're perfect. Not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. Particularly interesting if u don't need to work, so you can spend your time in the great outdoors, sport, sport and sport. |
Re: Its time for me to move on !
We considered the Canaries, but decided we didn't want to live on an Island. I grew up on the I.O.W and found it quite restricting. I do agree that the climate is better than mainland Spain though.

Jo xxx Sorry to go on, I like people to take a leap. It might just be the best thing they ever do. Like it was for me. I totally understand what you're saying. :) |

The odds are stacked against people. and we have to tell them, or we'd be lying - You can see that I'm sure. At least then if they choose to give it a go, they are informed and know what they're facing! I hate being negative, but they ask the question and deserve honest answers. Jo xxx TBH there are enough Spanish chasing every job, and as for jobs with "prospects" they are alreay in the bag for a relative or cronie. As for pay and living on less money that was needed in the UK, yes it can be done, I know families who live a 500 to 600 per month, but it is not highly recommended. That is not to say there are not exceptions.......and I would have thought that it was public knowledge by now that there is a recession on in Spain, and that it would seem logical to stay put and conserve what you have at home. |

Jo xxx The recession is having such a bad effect on the Spanish people that I would never encourage anyone to take a chance and come over to look for a job, I would feel that I was putting someone into a bad situation. Those that have guaranteed work to come to and retirees or people with an income are the lucky ones. Some are lucky and gain work via relations and friends but unfortunately for every relative or friend that is helped there are a lot of others not so lucky and are disgruntled. I think that a couple of years ago it would have been much easier to just pop across and try your hand but these are different times now. All we can do is to continue being straight forward and honest with posters. Rosemary |

It would be helpful if those who have moved and found there are better job prospects in Spain post as to how they did it and what they do. Perhaps the 33% unemployed spaniards in andalucÃa would like to know too.

My mother job was cleaning "casas rurales" in Segovia, but it was good then went bad, and she was put out of the job. Things were bad so we came back to England to live with my brother. Now we have our own flat, and it is better, but I will like to go to Spain to live, AGAIN, but not now. Graciela. Nice to know other FDEZ, |

As for us, we had no need to work, but this is what we do now.... We work for an estate agents, although things are not great at the moment property is still selling. We clean and maintain a few holiday homes, including seeing guests in and out etc. This pays quite well and we are quite busy with this for about 9 months of the year. We work with a local language school. This includes all summer being part of a full english imersion course for children. The children stay with us from monday til friday, we feed them with english food, speak english with them, they watch english TV and play english games etc. They have classes everyday which are run by the school. Other british families in the village also host these children. The classes take place at our house as we have a lot of room, we also get payed for this on top of what we get for having the children. In the winter we host adults at the weekends, who also want to learn english. The language school has also just opened a new school in the local town, so I guess we will also get involved with teaching there..... if we have time!!!! |

Thats the way to do it. To have an income and that gives you a buffer to enable you to settle and hopefully find work, cos it seems most work comes by knowing people and being part of a community. for a family to land with nothing but hope, isnt a good start to "the dream" especially as things are with mass unemployment. some may hit lucky, but one should always have a back up plan. Imagine having to unpick it all after 6 months cos the money has run out - having to go back to the UK with nothing, find accomodation, schools, jobs - and even having to tell everyone it didnt work........... !!

Re: Its time for me to move on !
For anyone seeking to go and work in Spain there are two main options. One is teaching English in one of the big cities like Barcelona, and especially Madrid.
Another option for those who are IT geeks is to get work in the exploding IT sector. Wiseri.com and Infojobs.net are a good start. Here's a website that has just been started - where an internet has the "empleo" sign you'll find their jobs page http://www.internetmadeinspain.org/ It varies from company to company, but Tuenti in particular appear to be setting on people Open Positions - Engineering Backend Engineer Frontend Engineer Frontend Engineer (Barcelona) IT Intern JavaScript Engineer Lead Engineer, Frontend Lead Engineer, Messaging QA Engineer (Barcelona) QA Engineer (Madrid) QA Engineer Intern Release Engineer Software Engineer Intern Test Framework Engineer Open Positions - Design and User Experience Mobile UX Designer UX Designer User Interface Developer Visual Designer Another IT jobs board for startup companies is here http://dir.betabeers.com/post/ Lastly, always worth checking on Twitter - search on "Madrid empleo" or "Barcelona jobs" for various new opportunities. Good luck :fingerscrossed: |

I had a very busy well paid job with social services in the UK. It is great not having the pressure, although the spanish kids can be stressful!! I am quite happy with my menial jobs in Spain. |

http://en.europeonline-magazine.eu/s...is_180444.html The Spanish talkboards like this one advise anyone moving to Spain, to rent for a while before choosing to buy. Maybe it would be smart to target the new British arrivals? Alternatively, as suggested above, target a niche. Very dangerous again, if you are relying just on high season. For example this report shows Russian tourism to Spain is growing now, but would high season just be a couple of months rent, and the rest of the year vacant? http://singularspain.com/tourism-2/r...l-and-majorca/ http://www.diariosur.es/v/20111221/t...-20111221.html The Costa del Sol has been how the volume of Russian tourists increased by 72% during the year 2011. This area of the Spanish South arouses great interest among Russians every year and it is the second favourite destination in the fastest growing number of Russian tourists behind Majorca. The Costa Brava is still the region preferred by Russians, although the areas mentioned above are still cutting distances. In addition, the Junta de AndalucÃa is searching with an ad campaign to promote the virtues and the attractions of this autonomous region for tourism among Russian and Polish people. As demand has grown, so the air connections with Russia have grown so, and up to 25 Russian cities have had flights making stopover in Spain. Forecasts point to a growning of the Russian tourism in the coming years. Much of the Russian tourists are people with a high purchasing power and leave great amounts of money in cities where they spend their holidays. Some of them even look for luxury products that they can find in places like Puerto Banus. http://www.arabianbusiness.com/emira...in-442541.html Emirates Airline has said it will launch Barcelona as its route to Spain in July, just days after doubling flights to Madrid. The airline said it is embarking on a major boost to its services in Spain on the heels of mounting demand for its Madrid service, launched in August 2010. The daily Barcelona flights will start on July 3, while the Madrid services will be doubled from July 1. |
