Its so cruel!

Why oh why do the pet shops in Spain and Portugal (I know it happens in other countries too) have little puppies in small glass enclousures for sale? This morning I have seen two of the cutest Maltese Terriers about 2 months old looking so sad and trapped. They want 750 euros each for them!!! I came away in tears its just so heart breaking :( If I could have, I would have got the two of them.

I know the feeling, everytime we see them my daughter says that "when" she wins the lottery she will buy a place in the country and open a rescue centre for all those poor dogs and cats etc.,

The pups I saw this morning were in Portugal, they have a pet shop in our local Carrefour and so far I know of two pups that have died after a week of being bought with parvo!!!!

What really does annoy me is that half the time they dont have any water in their bowls. Twice now I have had to tell the staff in the shop to fill their water up :curse:

Think shops selling kittens and puppies must be banned now in Uk because you never see them. But there are a lot of adds in free newspapers offering various breeds of puppies from yorkshire terriers to st bernards all on one phone number so they must be buying them from puppy farms and selling on at huge profits and I always wonder what happens to the ones that don't sell

I've wondered that too. How can someone offer almost every breed of dog for sale?

Greedy people are too busy breeding dogs to make loads of dosh, when what they should be doing is adopting stray and unwanted dogs from the many dogs homes.

We had someone come in at work with a cocker spaniel pup. It was docked, which you don't see very often and i bet it wasn't a vet that carried out the docking:eek: No papers, very thin, was told it was 10 weeks old was more like 16/18 weeks. No vaccines not been wormed. They bought it from one of these adds. There were kennels in the gardens with various breeding bitches of several different breeds and the pups for sale were in the back yard!:curse:

Working in a vets and being an animal lover I find it very hard to be nice to some of the breeders that we have in, though I must say we don't have a lot because most will not pay the fees for the vets! If they do have a c section tmost insist on taking the animal home because they won't pay an hospitalisation fee! They are the ones I find it very hard to be civil too

Some people are very naive and don't see what people are doing is wrong, they think that they are being well cared for. I did encourage someone to report a place where they got their dog from but not a deal was done, as far as I'm aware they are still trading

I thought docking of tails was illegal now due to how much suffering a poor dog can go through?

Reading your last two posts Jean, has got me absolutely lost for words. Since I came back from seeing these dogs I have just felt so low and depressed. Knowing I cant do anything about it just makes me so bloody angry!!

I have to say, I don't agree with it but for a shooting dog it is absolutely essential.

I think it became illegal to do it yourself but not for vets to do it but not many vets will. But that doesn't stop breeders/farmers doing it themselves. I shall ask when I go to work

If its done by a vet fair enough but they dont do they - an aquaintance had a friend who had a rottwieler (soz cant spell it) the person they got it from had docked its tail and it went bad - the dog was in a right state and lost the whole tail - mind you hearing about it it must have been glad to get rid of the pain.

I agree with you Matt. If you have a working dog then docking does prevent them fron injuring themselves and aslong as is carried out by a vet with pain killers and follow up appointments then all should be fine but there's no need for a family pet to be done just cos people think they look better! My cocker has a tail and she looks perfectly fine with it!

some dogs are docked and they have 1/2 a tail and that looks stupid and others get docked that near to the stump they struggle to sit down because there's not enough of it to move to one side

I'm sure it was banned decades ago in the UK. It's heartbreaking to go into pet stores in the US and see 6 mth old labs in cages.

A good dog breeder does not need to advertise their pups...most are sold before they are even born. The people selling multiple breeds are probably puppy mills...sometimes they breed the dogs themselves or buy dogs that unscrupulous breeds can't sell. :curse:

Plenty of puppy farmers around, and many of them are in the Welsh Borders, they are, in fact, illegal as you do need a licence if you keep more than, I believe, 2 breeding bitches.

I cant even look at the link!! It really depresses me what people are capable of. I have a patterdale terrier and he is def the love of my life, he is 1 yr old but he is wise beyond his years, if my hubby or kids try and cuddle me he bites them, not sore, just mouthing, but he does it silently, not a peep out of him, who says animals are dumb. I dont think so !!!

Jean I wonder if you can advise me on a problem I have with my dogs? Basically they are mad to get out all the time, when we were away they escaped 3 times and once were gone for 5 hours. They used to do it in Spain all the time and it was a worry especially after what happened to our other two dogs. We bring them for plenty of walks most evenings we head up to a country farm park so long as weather is permitting. The garden is fully fenced and any gaps have been filled, but they are still determined. Like this morning for instance I let them out in the garden and next thing they have broken some of the fence off, and are frantically digging under to get out. Luckily I heard them.
We've been advised to get them castrated, but will this stop them? If so I'll do it, but if they are still going to be the same I'd rather not, what do you think?

Thanks :)

Back to the original subject, here's a picture of my dog not long before he was murdered, note that his ears are a strange shape. Before we got him from the rescue home some Spanish gyspies had him and they cut his ears off with a scissors:mad:

http://britishexpats.com/forum/attac...1&d=1187351965
the other pic is our babies now with their bruvs and sisters after I rescued them off the main road.

Also something was never cleared up when we lived there as we never had the actual proof of what actually happened, but I feel now it was confirmed when we went back. As there was a piece in the local rag about poison baits being left out to kill pets. Even in popular walking spots. When he died all the locals swore blind "nobody around here would do that" now it seems that its common knowledge that they actually do. So anyone with pets going out there or already living out there be aware that this does happen.

Also I have come to realise that his death and the theft of our other dog was one of the major factors of my depression, as I was never the same after that again.

I despise animal cruelty:(

Vegetarianism has nothing to do with it though, just because you eat meat doesn't mean you should not be horrified by what they do. I am a vegetarian but don't see too much of a problem with my family eating meat, although I am encouraging free range and organic meat at the mo. If they have to be eaten hopefully they'll have half a nice life when they are alive.

But eating cats and dogs is just dispicable along with horses. And it happens in Spain, my aunt was in Torrevieja at a chinese restaurant and dog was on the menu, she asked what it was and the waitress bold as brass said "dog" my aunt thought there was a mix up in translation and couldn't believe her ears and said "are you sure dog, wuff wuff" and she replied yes "dog" my aunt walked out.

Also (okay I'm on my soap box now, chinese were mentioned) this makes my blood boil, they skin cats and dogs alive for their fur. They even disguise it as fake by dying it as its cheaper to manufature it than fuax fur, then sell it to the EU countries. So a customer thinks they are buying fake fur but if it has been made in china its more likely to be cat or dog, even if its pink or blue. Sometimes they even use real fur to make little stuffed dogs and cats etc. Disgusting, I had watched a doc by Heather Mills about it and was horrified then recently they actually showed a chinese guy on 5news skining a dog alive. It was horrible as he didn't know what was going to happen and his tail was wagging, then he started squealing....:curse:just nasty and horrible. I'm trying to boycott anything made in China, but its difficult as virtually everything is made in China.
