My bad (again) maybe... for various reasons I choose not to put a Geo-DNS-relocator in the router, and leave it up to individual device (user) to sort themselves out - there are several here who object to being 'UK based'..

I simply want to to be able to switch channels on the big TV from the the comfort of my sofa with just a mouse, no other intervention required. Laptops and tablets are not a concern for me, I can kick those through as needs be.

Thought projection is on my wishlist.

Well just use a Firestick inserted into an HDMI on your T.V and just pop the smart DNS setting direct on Firestick......simple and the simplest remote....even by click or voice command.

Can someone give me a reason why a VPN is better than a Smart DNS, apart from the fact that some of them are free.

I have used both and for simple things like getting into geoblocked sites, DNS is very simple and can be installed directly onto various devices whereas a VPN is very limited - you cannot install it on most routers and very few devices. It also slows down your Internet connection, in some cases very significantly - especially if you have something below 5mb.

Nope there isn't any reason. That's because DNS as you say is simple and effective and also very very inexpensive. Example Smarty currently offer 2 years for $69 (approx 59€) thats roughly 50 centimos a week. Plus its advantage of not slowing your speeds down.
