How very polite. Personally I think pongo or grunt is more appropriate for the green machine and fishead for the other lot.

How surprising that an Apache Gunner/Co Pilot may have shot someone. I heard a woman on the radio today who's daughter is about to deploy that he had put her daughter at more risk? He went out and did what he was trained to do nothing more nothing less, he could easily have got out of going and putting his life on the line and good on him. Credit where credit is due in my view, he's a credit to the Royal family

In my experience it is the RN that use crabfat to describe RAF or sometimes Marines, I have heard the army use it as well but they tend to prefer to call you Biggles. I was in the RAF Regiment a Rockape and proud of my 22 years service basically as you put it a Grunt who wears a blue best suit. Inter service banter is just that at the end of the day we all serve in our own way.

never heard a marine called a crab/fat - but yes it has been used for the RAF, as is pongo for Army
but within the senior service you have Chockheads for flight deck staff (you put chocks under the wheels of aircraft to stop them from moving) and but they respond with Fish-heads for general service sailors.

irrespective, it is as you say inter-service banter that is jocular, rarely enters into fisticuffs, we all appreciated we had a job to do, sometimes we worked together, I spent time with both army and raf on assignments where we were able to mix together the various differing training and frontline experiences to make highly effective teams.

As to the redundancies, it is true that many £millions has been spent on equipment and training that will be just thrown away. Many jobs do not have any civilian equivalent and although certain C&G etc certificates of competency may be issued they may well be as useful as toilet paper to a civilian employer. However, many employers realise that ex-servicemen have a sense of discipline that is sadly missing for most civvies.
However it is pity they don't have the foresight to start using those made redundant as forces civilians with specialist knowledge - instead of civilians with no knowledge. That would be too logical, but then someone will find out what it is they are hiding from the guys & gals in the frontline.

Sorry Dom my typing meant RN and sometimes Marines use the term for RAF, not that Marines are called that. I believe it came from the colour of the Blanco used by RAF?

As for the ARSE site there are some on there that take it way beyond banter.

Can't beat service humour

bob, we have been there done that, some have the tattoos as well as the teeshirt, we all have/had respect for the other guy, even if he did wear a funny suit or as in the case of the RAF went home at 5pm every evening.
the forces camaraderie is something civvies can never really understand

ARRSE I have seen, posted on, but find that it can at times be an excuse for mild mannered wimps to hide behind the anonymity of forums to be outrageous.

The Arse site can be quite humorous but for some reason many on there are particularly venomous towards my old Regt, which as I say goes way beyond banter. Some of the posters have in fact when they have slipped up with their posts have turned out to be wanabes or Walter Mitty type characters. I do though find it quite offensive when they make it personal in regards to our lads that have lost their lives or been seriously injured.
As I have said I have served with many Infantry and other Army lads along with doing courses with RN and Marines. There was always friendly banter but never any real nastiness. I did find the Parachute Regiment very aloof and superior, but speaking with those attached to them from other Army Regts they said they were the same towards them, you are either a para or a lower being. To be honest even within The RAF Regiment our Airborne unit has a similar attitude.
I think a lot of the real personal Arse banter/abuse followed the formation of the Special forces Support Group SFSG. Initially on formation of that unit you had to come from either Parachute Regiment, Marines or RAF Regiment and all had to be Paras. I say this because on Arse they keep saying the Raf Regiment think they are one of the big 3. Thing is this not something new in the WW2 when the Marines were used to take out V2 sites etc they always had RAF Regt attached to the Units, same for taking airfields, because of the knowledge of airfields. The RAF Regt was formed in 1942 by Royal Warrant as a Corps within the RAF to defend airfields both against ground and air attack. Our basic training is the same as any basic infantryman does, after that you do more specialised training which may be in what we call (Field Role) or LLAD (this role has now been handed back to the Army). In the Field role they operate on foot or in a variety of vehicles which has included CVRT etc, LLAD when I joined was Bofors and then Rapier. During your career you would often change roles.
It is an outfit that not many know or see much off other than our drill display team which is also The Escort to the queens Colour for the RAF (RAF generally are not the best at Drill that's why they use the Regt). So many people think The Raf Regiment are (some of the things I have heard read) Bandsmen, RAF Police, Gate/Aircraft Guards. Well yes we defend airfields sometimes we are on airfields but more often than not way away from the base patrolling or dug in as it is no point just defending an important asset like an airfield solely from within it's boundary. The RAF Tradesmen are trained by the Regt to carry out that role.
The other thing that seems to upset many on ARSE is that the RAF Regt is a very well equipped unit, well lets face it Airfields and Planes are important and expensive assets so they need to be well protected.
Some people in the RAF see the Regt as outside the RAF but others are very pleased they have the RAF Regiment to look after them.
A little known fact is that the Winged Dagger Emblem of the SAS was designed by an RAF Regiment Gunner a founder member of the SAS, Bob Tait MM.
I think when it was formed the RAF Regiment knew it was going to get grief from it's Motto (adapted from the RAF's) Per Ardua basically Through Adversity

Not quite sure I get the question if it is do I see the RAF Regiment as Special Forces the answer is no. Do I see those from the RAF Regiment that are serving with either SAS or SFSG as Special Forces then yes along with the others that serve with them.

By the way my previous post was not trying to say that the RAF Regiment were special just outlining a bit of what they do as many don't know who or what they are.

before you let the cat out of the bag i would have said "keep it that way"
there are many things the guys and gals have done over the years that civvies know absolutely nothing about and probably never will.

standby for 2 ranging shots, just to warm the barrels
