How long until the green credit card sized eu citizen card is invalid
(Couldn't fit all my questions in the title due to the length limit)
Basically I've been living in Spain for 8 years now, I'm aware that there has been the option to obtain a TIE since the withdrawal agreement of 2020. Originally I put zero effort in exchanging my green credit card sized "Citizen of the EU" (the one with the NIE on it) card for a TIE because I was informed it wasn't really necessary and that it'd only be used to speed up some proccesses.
It's become clear that my stance on it is no longer tenable. Mainly because I'm being asked by my bank, my employer and the border agents for a TIE card.
So I'm planning on exchanging it as soon as possible. My questions are:
1) Can I still exchange it?
2) Does anyone know the current process for obtaining a TIE? Asking as I see a lot of information on Google, they point to forms or things that seemingly have changed since the articles were written. I want to resolve this now as soon as possible and don't want to get caught up in the "This form is incorrect" loop.
3) When I take the forms etc to the local police station, how do I know when I need to book the next appointment to pick up the TIE? Do they tell me "come back in a week" or something or will I be notified?
So far I understand the process to be:
- Get my padron certificate from my local town hall because my address is different on the current green card thing (Marbella - I don't have a digital certificate so can't access the sede electronica or whatever it is to get it)
- Complete modelo 790 to pay for the card
- Fill out form EX-23
- Book an appointment with my local CNP
- Take my passport and padron certificate and current green card along with stamped model 790 and filled EX-23
- Hope for the best?
- Book another appointment to actually pick the card up
I find processes like this to be somewhat daunting so would love to know ahead of time if I'm missing anything or if things have changed and theres now some new way of obtaining it.

Take a photocopy of your passport and padron certificate (volante) as well. Payment card to pay the fee as they don't take cash. Probably a good idea to keep a photocopy of your green certificate.

When I exchanged my green card at Malaga they checked paperwork was correct fingerprinted me and said come back in 6 weeks. I went back after 6 weeks and my card was ready. It was a fairly straight forward procedure.

I wasn't asked for it, it doesn't appear to be necessary.

If you are merely changing from one document to a newer version, the assumption will be that you met the relevant criteria when you got the first document.

Do not forget to check that the form you print off is exact. When we did ours they said that our copy for the police was missing some words on the bottom and we had to do it again( including) paying for a second time. They pointed to a small piece of paper stuck to the screen in front of us. Which is no use when you are at home filling out the paper work

I wasn't asked re medical or income I presumed because you've already proved that to obtain the green card? It's an exchange not new issue although if the green card is temporary then they will issue a temporary TIE. I had, had my temporary green card 3 years when I exchanged but got a 5 year temporary TIE. I remember reading somewhere that I should be able to change that for a permanent TIE after 2 years? However I will simply go for the Permanent TIE when current one expires.
You can exchange your card earlier than five years if the card is a temporary and you have completed five years of residency (but you'll only know that if you keep a copy of your certificate as only that has the date residency started on it):
Este documento tendrá una validez de cinco años y se considerará temporal. Aquellas personas que hayan alcanzado los cinco años de residencia legal en España podrán acceder a la residencia permanente antes de que expire la validez del documento de residencia expedido, solicitando la expedición de un nuevo documento de residencia que tendrá una validez de diez años considerándose permanente.

Thanks yes that's what I thought. To be honest it makes no difference to me I will get the permanente one when the Temporary runs out.
