Until recently tobacco was the most highly subsidised crop per hectare in the EU. It was stopped but looks like it's about to re-start.

I'm generally in favour of the EU but it's easy to see why people get pissed off with it. This sort of idiocy adds fuel to the antis fire. Ridiculous.

Absolutely. But remember the tobacco industry is very powerful and influential, they spent millions of dollars trying to persuade us smoking wasn't harmful!

Apparently it was the Spanish who introduced tobacco to Europe, not Walter Raleigh. They've been growing it here ever since.
