Help stop bullfighting being declared a Bien de Interés Cultural
The bullfighting lobby want it declared a BIC (item of cultural interest) so they can get more grants. Already, the industry received around half a billion euros a year in subsidies. Yet 67% of Spaniards are opposed to or indifferent to it.
If you care about such things, you might like to sign this petition and share it with your friends:
Comisión de Cultura del Congreso de los Diputados: NO A LA DECLARACIÓN DE BIC PARA LA TAUROMAQUIA
Muchisimas gracias!

I shall do my bit.
By the way, I hope the funding isn't coming from us, via those clowns in Brussels ?

The European Union is spending £30 million per year to support Spanish bullfights, which will kill at least 40,000 bulls this year. The EU has also renovated bullrings and is being urged by the Spanish government to recognise bullfighting as representative of Europe's cultural heritage.

Yes, and much more comes from the IVA tax on everything you buy in Spain.

Re: Help stop bullfighting being declared a Bien de Interés Cultural
so why doesn't foxhunting and cockfighting in the UK get EU funding as part of the heritage ??
ok perhaps we have moved on a bit from the "good old days", and bull fighting is "heavily regulated" but surely it is an anachronism in these modern times ??
and grants to do up bullrings - there are more iconic buildings here falling down that need help.

I'd like to think we have better ways of using our spare cash, but I sometimes wonder.

Spain has several, including flamenco and the whistling language of La Gomera in the Canaries.
I've got mixed feelings about trying to keep traditional customs and languages alive artificially, especially if it involves spending public money. If enough people want them, they will survive; if not they should be left to die out of their own accord.

Is this petition for or against bull fighting? Sorry I don't speak Spanish!

Sorry! It's asking the Ministry of Culture to drop the proposal to make bullfighting an item of "special cultural interest". The organisers are against bullfighting, but what they object to specifically here is the use of public money to subsidise it, especially at a time when drastic cuts are being made in healthcare and education.
