Motor cycles with engines of more than 49cc are treated just like cars in terms of licence.
If you already hold a full UK [EU Type] licence then you can drive on of these mopeds/scooters.
If like some people you have no licence at all but want to ride one of these you can get a special licence/permit by taking a very simple test. The best way is to approach a driving school and make the enquiry.
There is no provisional licence in Spain and neither can you be taught to drive by any one other than an authorized driving school.
For tax purposes you can import into Spain any motorcycle without paying the car tax and is treated as a personal possession.
Hope this helps.

Also when you take out insurance you also have to have life insurance.
Thought the age limit had gone up now to 16 in line with other Europeans countries

Dorrian,
There is no such thing in Spain as a Provisional Licence. You either have a full Spanish Driving Licence or a Full EU [UK] driving licence. You take a very simple test over here for an under 49cc moto. It cannot be that difficult as you can see millions of them about [they usually overtake you on both sides and to find one crossing my car roof would be no surprise!!!]
Ask at your local driving school. When you do pass the test dont get too excited as it is only a permit not a licence!!! and can easily be revoked by a bit of sillyness!!!!!

Also bear in mind that a full (car) UK licence enables you to drive anything up to 124cc as a full licence holder (e.g carrying passengers), unlike the restrictions imposed in the UK.

This is a bit of a grey area isn't it? Cos I thought they were covered for a 125 with a car licence, but Linea Directa came out to check a friend's scooter and licence, and told her she wasn't covered to ride it. And she's had a full UK car licence for about 20 years.

A full Spanish driving licence allows you to drive any motorcycle under 125cc without further tests.
But a full UK licence clearly states that you can only drive motorbikes under 50cc without further tests - and insurance companies will not knowingly cover you for anything bigger in Spain or elsewhere if you hold a UK licence.
Can anyone clarify the situation for certain?

Yes my understanding was the same as Xtreme.

My old red licence used to cover almost anything with wheels.
The green paper one covered A to E, very similar to the red one.
When I got the plastic one it only covers B to D1E.
When I enquired about the motorcycle ommision, they said yes its not on the new licence, you have to show your bike test pass for it to be included. WTF.
This must of caused havoc, how many keep the pass certificate ? especially when my original licence used to cover MB`s and I never had one to start with.
PS my licence doesn`t even show a scooter in the pics.
