If his Internet provider in the UK is BT, and he's only after email access, may be worthwhile using their Fon Wi-fi (free of charge in other countries if you have the Total Broadband package in the UK)

btfon - faqs

Just the usual campo caveat - don't expect to get coverage everywhere, and btw be aware that sometimes the unsecured wifi turns out to be pay as you go.... and another thought, our ayuntamiento has a free access internet room - maybe others do too?

Always learning something from this site.

We have just signed up to the BTfon site - just what we are needing to keep in touch when on holiday.

Thank you.

The Vodafone dongle is €60, the credit will expire after 3 months , but depending on his usage, it may not last very long at all, and then he will have to top it up in the same way as a mobile phone. It all depends on how much data he uses.

All the info can be found at the bottom of this page;-

You just plug it into a USB port on your laptop, it will self load the program and then you can just connect to the internet. No need for a mobile phone.
