Hi,
Anyone had problems with the Halifax? A friend of mine is having problems transferring money to Spain, they now want to charge for the service.
Anyone out there had problems?

Tell your friend to open a NATIONWIDE FLEX account in the UK. This account allows you to withdraw money at any European ATM free of charge. It applies the Visa bank rate to cash withdrawals and therefore you get a better exchange rate.
Simply use this method to top up the Spansih bank account when in Spain.
Also if he uses Ryanair or Easyjet, get him to open a Halifax Easycash account. This account will give him a Visa electron card. Using this card he can buy tickets without having to pay the fees a normal debit/credit card incur.
You can access both accounts via the internet, so he can be based in Spain and still benefit. I thnk he would have to have a UK address toopen the nationwide account though.

I recently had an interesting time with another High Street Bank, I went into my local branch to change my address to my Spanish one, three days before completion of our sale and subsequent move.
I asked if I could open a particular enhanced interest internet account from Spain as an existing customer and was assured that I could.
Naturally enough when I arrived and tried I found that it was not possible.
I complained and after a bit of discussion they reverted my recorded address to my previous address, I opened the account and my address was changed back to my Spanish one.
Score one for customer service.

If you look at this page on HALIFAX UK web site, it says that there are Free transfers. As this is currently advertised I would have no hesitation to tell the lasses at Halifax to make the transfer for nowt.
It may be that Halifax Hispania and Halifax Uk are changing the service but this web page is clear and should be referred to by your friend.

Hi Nige,
I followed the link and read this ! They have obviously started charging
Send any amount to any destination and pay £19.50* via branch or telephone banking and just £9.50 via online banking.
Note to LIC - they need to transfer money across as they live in the UK. Yes you can draw money out of "Hole in the Wall" machines but you have to be IN SPAIN

I bought my house 3 years ago used HiFX who transfer the money to their Madrid office then onto your Spanish account they didn't charge anything for their service. The rate was very competitive I guess their costs must be built into the rate. Still very happy with them and would use again.I wopuld never use these Building Society's who play at being bankers, And moan if you bring little jonnies five pounds worth of 20ps to cash, Use a company that moves foreign currency as their Bread and Butter so to speak. anywayyyyyyyy please yourselves...............whoooooooo errrrrrrrrrrrrr Mrs.

Hi
Lets see if we can't get this back onto the original thread that I started.
I have used the Halifax banking service in England & Spain to transfer money across at various times. My friends (who live in England) want to transfer money into their Spanish bank account. They too have always used the Halifax transfer service. HOWEVER in the last two weeks they have been told they must pay.
Thanks to the link NIGE gave, I think that the Halifax have now started to charge and the "Transpaency" that they had about using your money anywhere in the world has gone now that they have been taken over.
Anyone else got comments on the Halifax?
(start your own thread on other banks please)
