Grass maintenance!

Our lawn is going really yellow and seems to be dying with the sun. It was fine until this really hot weather we are having, but now it looks awful. It gets a good watering everynight and morning before the sun comes up. Is there anyone out there that knows what we are doing wrong? We have only had the lawn since January so havent had to tend to it in hot weather.

No doubt matty boy will be along, but I know you need a lot of water to keep a lawn looking good. Maybe you need a sprinkler system to come on for an hour in the evening. Not sure if watering it with a hose for 5 mins in this heat is going to do it

We have an irrigation system, but the pipes dont pop up. Hubby thinks it could be to do with the water pressure. We do stand there for about 15 minutes morning and night giving it a good soak. I can see us having to pave it before the summers over :curse:

Only water it at night when the sun has gone down or you will scorch it.

Yes I forgot to mention that ... our neighbour says watering in the morning or day is detrimental to plants for sure. Always waits until the sun has set

Portuguese grass. It does only get watered when the sun has gone down or before the sun comes up.

Its a bit of a myth to be honest, otherwise plants would die every time it rains during daylight hours.
It only really applies to water soluble feeds, the minerals will kill them.

The main reason you don't water during the day is that you lose a greater percentage of it due to evaporation than is absorbed, and you should never water the foliage anyway, it causes too much top growth, not enough root growth.

So only water the roots?

water the ground around the roots. The RHS did a massive test last year during the drought and half the plants they only top watered, the other half had a ground based irrigation, both the same amount of water, the results were quite amazing.

What did he feed it with? When and did the sun get on it after he fed it?

Sorry Matt but have to disagree with that.
Gordon Ramsey cooks his cabbage in less heat than you would get watering the grass in 40 c heat.

I will find out when he comes in. But I have a funny feeling it may have been in the morning before the sun got on it.

Is it the runner grass that grows like strawberry plants, If it is don`t worry it will soon get back unless he has killed it will the chemicals.
Ours gets watered now and again and has never had any fertilizer on it, its only campo grass after all.

its more the myth about water scorching the leaves, it is a myth, but I take your point about the heat.

Just asked hubby and he mowed, fed and watered it in the morning before the sun came round to the garden.

The feed may very well have scorched the grass, the feed minerals will have been on the blades.

jdr is right (don't tell him though it goes to his head) if it is a runner type grass, and I suspect it would be because that is generally a "tropical" style grass, it will recover, just be kind to it next time.

Thankyou very much for the advice Matt, sent karma! Although I havent got a clue what "runner" grass is?

UK grass grows in clumps Spanish and probably your Portugeezer grass also grows to the side and sets down new roots as it grows across the ground, some shoots grow up two two or three metres long.

If thats the case then I dont think it is runner grass. This is more like English grass, a deep green and very soft to walk on.

Technically its a creeping grass, cool weather grass grows as a separate plant, warm season grass tends to grow as a creeper, it shoots off new stems, as jdr says like strawberries, and over time these become new plants.

Does anyone know anything about the caterpillar that can kill lawns? Our lawn really isnt doing very well and OH seems to think it may be that. All the other lawns round here seem to be doing ok but ours has got yellow patches and looks like the grass has died in parts :(

This one kills lawns real good....... but if its English grass it needs English weather, loads of water, its probably lack of it killing it.

Anyone noticed the name yet ? :D
