Talking going green

I am trying to do my bit for the environment and reducing my carbon footprint which is quite difficult with a house here and one in spain - so lots of air miles being used. I am trying to get suggestions of how to make my old townhouse more 'green'. In the UK an easy way is good insulation, my townhouse has none but I was wondering whether anyone had any thougths on insultaing the roof then plastering so I have a decent ceiling- at present it looks like I can see the underside of the roof tiles. Seems a good and relatively easy thing but someone has warned me against it - wondered what others thought?
