A local athlete who was banned from representing Gibraltar in the World Master Athletics championships in Malaga this weekend, staged a protest by unfurling a Gibraltar flag at the end of his race, having run in “neutral” colours till that point.Liam Byrne was the only one of five athletes banned from representing Gibraltar who decided to compete instead of boycott, after receiving a letter from the WMA claiming the instruction came from the Spanish government.

Panama papers Q&A: British overseas territories and Crown dependencies

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said the government should consider imposing "direct rule" on the 14 British overseas territories and three Crown dependencies if they do not comply with UK tax law.

Downing Street says it has asked three things of the overseas territories and Crown dependencies: the automatic exchange of tax information; a common reporting standard for multinational companies; and central registries so people know who owns companies.It says they have all delivered on the first two, so now they must deliver on central registries. Gibraltar, Bermuda and Jersey have already done so.

SPAIN WILL NOT CLOSE FRONTIER

Whatever happens at Brexit, Spain will not close the frontier. This emerged last night at a talk given in Madrid by the Spanish foreign minister Josep Borrell.

After saying that, he went off to meet the seven Campo mayors who were in Madrid to meet the minister on the Brexit issue.

But the minister has gone beyond that, saying that talks are 'with Gibraltar', which confirms the Gibraltar Government position that there is no separate bilateral process between the UK and Spain about Gibraltar.

Not only are the talks 'with Gibraltar', but there will be no agreement without Gibraltar.

The Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron has fired a warning flare after a Spanish Guardia Civil vessel got too close to the nuclear submarine HMS Talent, which was departing the Rock with a local tug.

Gibraltar has for years taken an increasingly-tough line on tobacco smuggling and its efforts, much maligned by successive Spanish governments, received a nod from an unlikely source this weekend – Spain’s largest tobacco company.In an interview with Europa Sur newspaper, Rocio Ingelmo, the head of legal and corporate affairs at Altadis, acknowledged the measures taken by Gibraltar to tackle contraband in tobacco products.

The United Kingdom has strongly and unambiguously stood by Gibraltar when exercising its Right of Reply to Spain’s statement at the United Nations. Describing the Rock’s parliamentary democracy as ‘vigorous’, it said that while its position remains that the fundamentals of its constitutional relationship are right, it’s open to proposals put forward by Gibraltar

in reality...far more contraband comes into Spain across the bay in the port of Algeciras than from Gibraltar

Also the smuggling from Spain into Gibraltar should not be ignored including the fact that Spain is the source of the majority of drugs available in Gib.
