Since the Maastricht treaty every citizen of every member state holds EU citizenship. In the UK very few people are even aware of this and those that are will regard it as worthless if the commission fails to defend the rights of British citizens when they are threatened

In Europe, UKIP would push for commitments from
our European neighbours, as well as multi-national organisations, to guarantee the British sovereignty and territorial integrity of Gibraltar and its waters. In the South Atlantic, we must not ‘negotiate’ or kowtow to Argentine aggression over the Falkland Islands, but uphold and respect the islanders’ decision – through the selfdetermination of a recent referendum – their overwhelming desire and right to remain British. Nigel would have my vote if I had one |

They've got mine because they are the only party that talks up for British people and British interests abroad.

But you do have one if I read the HM Gov electoral registration site correctly Gib is one of the few places mentioned where you get a vote if you register.
We do have the right to vote in the EU elections as part of the South West. |

Interesting view on Brexit - that each part of Britain, including Gibraltar, should have a separate referendum and that the result would have to be unanimous. Since we know that the SNP (and probably Gib) would favour continued membership this could be Cameron's "get-out-of-jail" card on the EU. He has his referenda but Britain stays in - Eurosceptics trumped. Result!

Re: Gibraltar 2
Having left the UK in 72, I firmly believe that what was promised in the 70s regarding European unión was one of the biggest crocks ever. After 40 years in Mainland Europe, I wonder how I ever fell for it. I dislike the US but we really don't belong on this side of the pond. How do you unify Europe, as an example one of the main European players has over 1700 taxes and over 150,000 laws and their numbers continues to grow. I was told throughout my formative years that Germany would never again be reunited yet alone dictate to Europe what everyone must do for Their Vaterland, Uberalles ! Yesterday on the Beeb there was a big thing about people being arrested for insulting the President of Turkey, Last year In Italy a newspaper that printed an article against the Italian president had their Editor sentenced to 6 months in prison. It is called vilipendio al capo dello stato. Also if you swear or insult a public official you can be arrested and tried. My father in law was fined for crossing the road when the traffic lights said he couldn't, there wasn't a vehicle in sight but there was a local pseudo policeman who saw everything.

Safety bill calls for 30,000 euro fines for “offenses against Spain†| In English | EL PAÃS
Meanwhile in Spain, "safety laws" ? Deliberate Public suppression more like. I have noticed what appears to be a much increased govt influence over media output of late also. Quite a few TV channels have apparently been firmly reminded to what extent they rely on govt assistance and co operation to survive. For TV news read, the non stop repetitive thoughts of chairman Rajoy, with the opposition receiving minuscule coverage by comparison and also very much less time spent discussing public dissatisfaction. I fancy Rajoy has picked up quite a few tips from the Franco days. Apologies if this should be on the Spanish section, I was simply following on from the post of maybe1 day. |
