Former First Sea Lord shocked by Spanish attitude to Gibraltar
- and alarmed by Spain refuelling Russian warships
"In strategic terms, Gibraltar is sitting on one of the nine key maritime choke-points in the world," concluded West. "At one stage, when Britain had its last empire, it controlled all nine of those but now the only ones we have some sway in are Gibraltar and the English Channel. The rest are being slowly taken over by the Chinese and others, which is worrying for global trade."

Ref. Gibraltar:-
a Spanish diplomat confirmed Spain no longer feels it has to limit its claim to the United Nations; after the Brexit vote, Spain is reportedly more willing to escalate this in other international fora and less concerned about the potential impact on its relationship with the U.K.

Spanish parliament hears support for Gibraltar’s right to self-determination
A parliamentary debate yesterday exposed the differing views on Gibraltar held by Spanish political parties, who share common ground on Spain’s sovereignty claim but are split on key issues including the right to self-determination.
The debate in the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Spanish Congress left no doubt that Spain’s principal parties want Gibraltar back, even if they differ on how to go about it.
But in a potentially significant development, there was clear support in the Spanish parliament for the right of Gibraltarians to decide their own future – and not just from regional parties with vested nationalist interests.

UN consensus decision includes ‘sovereignty double-lock’
The double-lock sovereignty commitment has never been included in a consensus decision before.
The text also notes the UK’s desire to return to the trilateral process and Spain’s position that the trilateral forum “…does not exist any longer and should be replaced with a new mechanism for local cooperation in which the people of the Campo de Gibraltar and Gibraltar are represented.”
Finally, the consensus decision “encourages UK and Spain to engage in a constructive and responsive manner, with all relevant and appropriate parties, in order to find common solutions and make progress on issues of mutual benefit.”

THE cross-border ties between Gibraltar and La Linea have always been strong, shaping the very vocabulary spoken in the neighbouring towns.
The effect of Spanish – and other – languages on Gibraltar’s Llanito has been well documented by local historian and cultural expert Tito Vallejo, whose Llanito Dictionary was published in 2000.
Now, a young linguist from La Linea has revealed her own university investigation into the impact Llanito and English on the Spanish spoken in her hometown.
Maria Ortega Amusco, a 22-year-old Granada University Spanish language graduate, earned a top-grade Matrícula de Honor for her thesis, Study of the influence of Gibraltarian English in the language spoken in La Linea de la Concepcion.

Spain’s top criminal court is to investigate claims that members of the far-right political party VOX were subjected to “torture” on the orders of Chief Minister Fabian Picardo after they were arrested for unfurling a Spanish flag in Gibraltar, in a case that was dismissed here yesterday as “frivolous and vexatious”.
A judge at the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid has admitted for process a formal complaint filed by VOX alleging “torture and crimes against moral integrity” for the way two of its members were treated by authorities in Gibraltar.
But Mr Picardo said VOX’s claim was “a clear abuse of process” and “a slur” on the reputation of Gibraltar’s police, prison and courts.
The Chief Minister has instructed lawyers and said he had full confidence in the Spanish courts and legal system.

Royal Navy fires flares as Spanish research ship enters British waters
A Royal Navy speedboat prevented a Spanish research vessel from deploying a sonar buoy in British waters in the Bay of Gibraltar today, in the latest of a string of incursions over the past 48 hours.
During moments of high tension, the Royal Navy fired at least three warning flares and repeatedly ordered the Spanish vessel to leave British waters.

Spanish research ship leaves Gibraltar waters amid diplomatic storm
The Spanish research ship involved in a string of tense incursions over the weekend appeared to cut short its work yesterday, sailing from Gibraltar waters just after midday under stormy skies and amid a brewing diplomatic row.
As the vessel sailed out into the Alboran Sea in heavy rain and rough seas, diplomats worked to analyse the sequence of events that sparked the first spat between London and Madrid since Spain’s new Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis Quecedo, took office earlier this month.
Both governments said they would file diplomatic protests over the events at sea, with UK MPs insisting that Britain should take a firm stance over the incursion.
Tory MP Bob Neill, the vice chairman of the Gibraltar group in the House of Commons, tweeted that the “strongest possible protest by [the] FCO [is] required.”
“Clearly [the] change of Spanish Foreign Minister has changed nothing.”
