Flood deaths in La Cala Finestrat
Sad news today about the elderly british couple drowned (!) while visiting a street market at La Cala Finestrat today. The market is held every Friday, adjacent to a dry river bed and very heavy rainfall in the mountains caused a 1 meter high wall of water to overwhelm the market. There have been floods there before (look on YouTube). The local authorities must have been aware of the risks.

They're always going to flood again at some time.

Yes sad business, most ppl.don't seem to realize the possible danger in these dried up river beds.
They're always going to flood again at some time.

Has anybody seen the houses that have been built below the dam between Granada and Motril? I think it's known as the Lecrin Valley, but not sure.
I wouldn't touch that new housing estate and it's the size of a village

Apparently they ran a stall in the market.

How can the local council allow a street market in a dry river bed at this time of year? Crazy!!

According to the latest reports, they were visiting the market, having a drink at a coffee stall. Apparently the ayuntamiento had at some point been fined for paving over the dry river bed. q.e.d.

One of the first things brought to my notice in Spain was the potential and likelyhood of apparently dried up river beds to flood sometime in the future.
Since then I've seen all sorts of ppl setting up business in them, even living in them, as well as farmers using them for livestock grazing and fruit growing.
However for the local council who were obviously aware of the risk, to tarmac this one over and continue putting ppls lives at risk, indeed probably increase the risk with the use of tarmac, beggars belief.
There again I wonder if the usual backhander or two made it worth their while.
No doubt a case like this would warrant a multi-million lawsuit in the States and a fair bit in the UK as well, so it will be interesting to see what happens here, thats if it doesn't suffer the almost inevitable delays and end up almost forgotten in the hands of time.

I bet this jackson/doctor trial is pulling in a pretty penny for most of those involved in it, and just think of the income from books and conspiracy theories, though no doubt that won't apply in the Benidorm case
