Fillet steaks? Where to buy?
Hi - we have tried, but failed, to find fillet steaks (or their equivalent) in or around Ayamonte. We realise that the local cuts of meat are different to those we are used to in the UK. Can anyone enlighten us as to what we should look for locally please? The BBQ awaits! Thank you.

Re: Fillet steaks? Where to buy?
In the South east corner of Ayamonte market there is a butcher who caters for those with deep pockets and a taste for the best.
He sells beef from Avila, known as the best Spain produces. It has been hung, it is is marbled with fat, as good beef must be, and it is perfectly delicious. He sells filllet, whole, or as steaks, and is the only place I know to get Ribs of beef.
He is right in the corner, next to the stairs up to the loo, and is the only butcher at the end of a row of fishmongers, so he is easy to find.
Alternatively, leave the market, walk 20 metres towards the marina, and you will be in the Plaza de La Lota, outside the restaurant El Limonero. You could ask them where they get their meat, their menu says their steaks are Aberdeen Angus.

Just reread my post, and realised that I still have trouble knowing left from right, east from west , etc.
The butcher is in the South west corner, nearest to Vila Real.

Also went the old Argentinian steak house few weeks ago and can fully recommend it, but that's eating out stuff.

Hi - thanks for that. Yes we have tried their 'Entrecote' which goes well on the Barbie, but not quite the same as fillet. We can also recommend the Argentinian Steak House, which we have visited several times!

Many thanks for this tip, irismary! We are in CE now and have found the butcher you mentioned. His steak is to die for and we have been back a couple of times! Highly recommended!

Yep, I buy the entrecot from Mercadona and it is consistently good (and consistently expensive). I have seen fillet steak on the same shelves but haven't tried it yet.

What is the price of a fillet steak from the shop / butchers ?
In UK its about £14 a kilo but you can sometimes grab one going out of date for half price.

Sorry about delay in replying, but have been trying to remember the price! In actual fact, we ended up buying entrecote instead of fillet, although both were available. The steaks were delicious, very tender and full of flavour. I bought 4 LARGE steaks which came to 32 Euros I think (sounds a lot, but they did weigh quite a lot, although I can't remember how much). Worth every cent in our opinion! Enjoy!
(By the way, we bought the meat at Ayamonte Market, at the butchers suggested above)
