Spain has wonderful fiestas/festivals and we have been to many. But Viveiro, with a population of about 22,000, has been hosting the Resurrection Festival for the past 10 years. Each year the festival gets larger and larger and approximately 120,000 people will attend this year. I have never seen anything like it.
We went to town yesterday and you cannot move for people. With Iron Maiden headlining this year (last year Motorhead) the town is full of visitors. The beach, any bit of green grass, the port - all full of tents. There is only about 4 small hotels in town so the visitors have to go somewhere. Forget about buying food in the supermarkets as they are just selling beer and drinks. There are three roads which lead into Vivieiro and each one has approximately 15 Guardia vehicles stopping all cars and vans etc.
The festival is "hard core" heavy metal music and I must admit it is amusing to people watch.
But tomorrow we are off to Portugal to escape the noise, people and the mess and will return in two weeks when everything in the town is back to normal.
So who can top this for a "festival"?

I would have thought Benicassim Festival. These are just paying music events not Spanish fiestas such as the Moors and Christians so not really comparable.
I used to have an office in Reading and always avoided the town when their music festival was running.
Mainly spoilt rich kids pretending they are slumming it!
