As there are several food threads around at the moment I thought I would start one on favourite fish.
I am fed up with so called celebrity chefs trying to tell me that pollack, whiting, coley etc are as good to eat as cod, plaice or haddock etc.
If that was the case why haven't we been eaten those species for years?
When I used to go sea fishing I never took those fish home and threw them back, occasionally someone would take some home for the cat.
Now we are led to believe their tasty. What rubbish!
My favourite fish is skate.

Cos the great British public are very set in their ways. Personally i love Whiting and think its better than Cod or Haddock. Monkfish was used as bait down to the fact it looks something out of a horror film. Now its very expensive due to chefs using on tv.

As I never ate much beyong cod, haddock and place in the UK I dont know the English names for fish, but I can tell you those I like in Spain.
Lubina is a great alround fish that we usually buy in the supermarket
Piscin/rape makes the most delicious battered fish I've ever tasted
Dorada and lubina is nice again, baked in salt
Rodaballo and Cabracho is nice occasionally but expensive, so will eat at special occasions at restaurants
Boquerones and sardinas are cheap, chearful and delicious to eat on a hot day at the beach!

One of the most consumed fish in Spain is panga, and it's crap!
Why? Because it's cheap. It's put into all sorts of things nowadays.

Yes, panga is cr*p. Unfortunately in any country many people want to buy cheap products and cheap very often means bad quality

I love smoked Salmon, kippers smoked and Cod or Haddock plain or smoked. That's it, not a fish eater.
I don't eat enough fish, however I tried Pangassa not sure if it's the same as Panga, which I have tried too and wasn't impressed.
I had some Pangassa thinking I would do myself some good. I thought it was similar in taste to Cod and was ok until it went right through me, I told the Nutritionist in Hospital about this and she said it's because it's all Fat. I was very surprised. It's dirt cheap I know why now.
I did a google and it got worse, it's a Vietnamese fish and comes from a river full of pollution in Vietnam, although I believe some are now bread in farms.

Not a big fish lover. Favourite is Cod in a light batter, not keen on haddock. Dorada and Plaice are ok too.
Haven't eaten Panga....I hope

Just found this, looks like Panga could be the same fish as Pangassa?

I quite like those fantailed shubunkins. They are very pretty.
Oh, EATING fish?
Cod (but not that horrible bacalao), hake, sardines (in tomato sauce), salmon (fresh or smoked) but my favourite is trout.
I can't see what all the fuss is about with those big prawns that people rave about. Too fiddly and not worth the effort.
