Exciting Times
There are two parties standing for the European elections this June which are being checked out by various ex-pat grass root groups, including the main property-abuse associations. The PP and the PSOE both being considered out-of-touch with the foreign residents in Spain (see their behaviour when the Auken Report was under discussion in Brussels). The two groups are both centrist and are both rising fast in the public consciousness; they are the CDL and the UPyN. The CDL (Centro Democrático Liberal) is headed up by a half Irish half Spanish candidate called Sean O'Curneen and there's an interview with him in today's El Mundo. The other party (Union de Progreso y Democracia) is headed by Rosa Diez, a senior politician who broke with the PSOE a couple of years back and started her own centrist group.
When (and if) we can all agree who to support, then there is some chance that the Europeans resident in Spain may have enough pull to get some concessions and recognition from whichever party is chosen.
By the way - Today, Monday April 27th is the last day you can check to see if your name is on the voting list posted in your town hall, or to get your name added (if you are already on the padrón).
