P.S. wasn't aware Spanish don't like the British

Its Lee8's point of view based on where he's lived ....... I have yet to experience anything but friendlyness and help around where we live and I know there are many on here that will say the same.

I have no doubt there are people here who hate the English, and the same could be said of some people in the UK about some races, but making people think that you have to keep the fact that you are English a secret here is a little over the top :D

We went to Benidorm today - it's astonishing how none of the Brits we met today could be arsed even to say 'gracias'.

Tonight, when I was walking the dog, I met up with our neighbour and we talked about Reyes and how it's for the children 'us adults get nothing' :), laughed about the electricity problem the other night (finally, the houses are 'sin fusibles') and why it was never a problem when it was just one house but is now it's two different houses, talked about the kids going back to school on Monday, blah blah blah.

It's astonishing what you can talk about with such a limited vocabulary of Spanish :D - just a few words creates a big gap between you and the 99.999% whatever who have no interest in learning the language, the culture, etc.

It is what ignorant people who lack inteligence call gypsies and travellers.

pikeys are generally a term used for Irish gypsy traveller types in the UK.

I guess you haven't seen Snatch (the film with Brad Pitt, directed by Madonna's Hubby Guy Richey as far as I remember), it's actually very funny :D

Actually, the people waiting at Alicante airport are estate agents. I've never seen any oranges, plenty of lemons though :)

I am still in the Uk but planning to move to spain in May. The posting above reminded me of my first move (from Hungary to the UK 5 years ago). In my experience the key to make such a big change successful is to be very well prepared and to speak the language to some extent. i agree with those who said one needs to try and integrate with the locals otherwise you will end up like those foreigners in the UK who can't get a job and everyone hates them. i also agree with some of those who posted negative comments about Spain. you can never be vell prepared enough for the surprises! However if you have stamina and use your brain it should be all right. to say it will be only sun sand and sangria would be deluded, but if you use your brain and work on it, you can succeed. (i have seen many foreigners to the UK who arrived with all sorts of crazy ideas, didn't speak the language, didn't know anything about the legalities and ended up miserable withtin a short space of time. or went home disappointed. however those who are realistic usually make a success of it)

the other thing i'd like to say is that it's all about individual preferences. whether you'll like Spain or not will largely depend on whether your expectations of life fit in with the spanish way of life or not. in my opinion.

for my part, i am paying attention to both the negative and positive stories, and will keep them in mind when OH and i start new life in Spain.

Re: Excited but apprehensive!

Life in Spain, or any other country to be honest, depends on why you are going.

If you are running from something, overcrowding, immigrants, nanny state, etc, etc,etc then you will all be disappointed.

If you are going to broaden your horizons and experience a new life abroad then the odds are on you doing well.........................

But seriously, why the hell are we still moaning about this, it happens every couple of months!
