EARTHQUAKE!!!!
I kid you all not! according to the USGS the epicentre was 30 miles from Hull where we live, a magnitude of 4.7 on the richter scale.
If this is what it was like 30 miles away I am glad I was not closer, it shook the whole house the bed moved across the floor, the noise it made was terrific, quite frightening! Not a lot of things would get me out of bed at 1 in the morning but am now so awake I ain't going back! |

Re: EARTHQUAKE!!!!
Now upgraded to a 5.2! Glad to say I managed a couple of hours sleep before work, even if they were troubled hours. Karen was rather worried about aftershocks, must say we had to sleep with the tv on low so she could get any new updates

Re: EARTHQUAKE!!!!
Felt it here in Norwich - had just turned the light off. I was quite apprehensive!

Re: EARTHQUAKE!!!!
epicentre was about 10 miles from where we used to live!!, but we didn't feel it at all  They ahve been reporting on Sky news from the town nearest to us where we used to go shopping every week. Hope none of our friends were hurt or had their houses damagerd, not bothered if the house we used to live in fell down though, they would have deserved it...

Re: EARTHQUAKE!!!!
No reports of any fatalities. Wost injury appears to be a young lad in Barnsley whose ceiling fell-in on him resulting in a fractured pelvis.
Some reports being made by 'witnesses' up and down the country are however, quite ludicrous:sneaky: "My house shook so violently that I thought we were under attack by Al Quaeda" "The house shook like it was made of paper" Liars phoning up Sky News searching for their 15 minutes of fame, making stuff up just to increase their chances of being interviewed by Eammon Holmes:lol: |
Re: EARTHQUAKE!!!!
Just been looking at a popular general discussion board full of English and the whole board is littered with threads about the earthquake. Epicentre was market raisen which is like 20 miles from where I used to live.
But Im GUTTED I missed it!! Damnit! Why does exciting stuff have to happen when im gone. First the floods, now earthquakes..... hmm is it me or is this planet getting a bit more.. erm.. active ? Ive been informed that the Costa Del Sol does sometimes get the odd tremmor like that as well. So maybe we can have our own earthquake parties at some point :) |

It is a long held belief that there is a major fault line in the Straits of Gibraltar that could have been the reason for the disappearance of Atlantis. The Spanish government have a contingency plan available for issuing a 30 minute warning to Andalusia should unnatural seismic activity be discovered in the region. |

I slept soundly through it.

Re: EARTHQUAKE!!!!
We've had GMTV outside the house all morning filming fallen chimneys etc and the roads all blocked off. I don't know which one was worse. Fame at last for sunny Gainsborough.
Because we move to Spain on Sunday I am sleeping on a blow up mattress, that was interesting while the house was shaking! My daughter fell out of bed and could hardly walk across the landing. It sounded like a car had driven into the house when the chimneys came down. The worst was the eerie silence in between the rumble and then car alarms going. Think its definatly time to go :D |

The best quote I have heard "Its a very British Earthquake, not much happened but we are all talking about it". Still very exciting. "Like a scene from a horror movie thought I was being over took by ghosts" - Love this one |

Re: EARTHQUAKE!!!!
I posted this on the CE thread about a year ago. Seemed like a good time for a repost. Apologies to all fellow people from Essex.
BREAKING NEWS An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale hit in the early hours of Thursday. Epicentre: South Ockendon, Essex. The quake decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their giro arrived. One resident - Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two Tyler-Morgan and Bacardi-Breezer slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was watching Jeremy Kyle" Martial law has not been necessary as incidents of looting, muggings and car crime have gone down. The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Sunny Delight, Red Bull and Mayfair cigarettes to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke and irreplaceable Bone China from Poundland. HOW CAN YOU HELP? This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most sought after, items most needed include: Fila or Burberry baseball caps Kappa tracksuit tops (his and hers) Tight fitting Adidas woven track suit bottoms (female) White sport socks Rockport boots Any items from Primark, Ethel Austin or Matalan. Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same. Required foodstuffs include: Microwave meals Tins of baked beans Ice cream Cans of Tennents Super, White Lightning or Special Brew. Remember - Just 22p buys a biro for filling in the compensation forms. £2 buys chips, crisps and blue fizzy drinks for a family of 9 £5 will pay for a packet of Golden Virginia and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected. Breaking news Rescue workers found a girl in the rubble smothered in claret - 'Where are you bleeding from?' they asked - "ROMFORD" said the girl, "woz that got to do wiv it?" |

Latest Up date; urgent appeal
A major earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, hit in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Epicentre: Barnsley, England
News of the disaster was swiftly carried abroad by the towns 35000 racing pigeons, as victims were seen wandering around aimlessly muttering "******hell" and "choofinnorah". The earthquake decimated the town causing £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from the Balearic Isles and the Spanish Costa's were damaged beyond repair. Three areas of historical burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their Giro arrived. Radio Barnsley reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered, still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in Barnsley. One resident, 15 year old mother of three, Tracey Sharon Braithwaite, said, "It was such a shock my little Chardonnay Madonna came running into my bedroom crying. The twins, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was watching Trisha the next morning". Locals were determined not to be bowed as looting, muggings and car crime carried on as normal. So far whilst the British Red Cross has managed to ship 4000 crates of Sunny Delight to the areas to relieve the suffering of stricken locals, rescue workers searching through the rubble have found large quantities of personal belongings including benefit books, jewelery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos and bone china from poundstretcher. Can you help? Please respond generously to our appeal for food and clothing for the victims of this disaster. Clothing is needed most of all - especially: Burberry or Fila baseball caps Kappa tracksuit tops (his or hers) Shell suits (female) White sports socks Rockfort boots or any other product sold at Primark Culturally sensitive food parcels are harder to put together, but your efforts will make a difference. Microwave meals, tinned beans, ice cream and cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew are ideal. Please do not give anything that needs peeling. Remember: 22p buys a biro for filling in compensation claims £2 buys chips, crisps and a blue fizzy drink for a family of 9 £5 will pay for a packet of B & H and a lighter to calm a child's nerves. Urgently required: Tinned whippet food. Bones for Jack Russells. Please do not send tents for shelter. The sight of such posh housing will cause discontent in the surrounding South Yorkshire communities. Regards, Olivia Finch Environmental Consultant |
