My father was one of the first english troops who entered Belsen, there but for the grace of god etc.

There's a coincidence, my dear dad was also one of the first, so maybe knew your dad. He would never talk about what he saw though.

You are wrong. There is a department for French expats, depending from the ministry of Foreign Affairs, that is all.

I think you may be behind the times. France have dedicated a small no of seats to allow representation of expatriate citizens just as though they were living in France

EMR .................. just as it is to continue to pay tax in the UK rather than your country of residence.

On the point of ´choosing to pay tax in UK´.

There is no such thing.

Where one must pay tax is set out the double taxation agreement between Spain and UK (or many other countries and Spain).

The Spanish UK agreement says all income must be taxed in Spain if one is tax resident here. Simply put. If you live in Spain you are tax resident. The only exceptions being Government employee pensions, e.g. military, police etc. (but not OAP) which, like income from rental property in UK, can only be taxed in UK. (NB the rentals may also be subject to additional tax in Spain).

The bulk of my income (Gov employee Pension) is taxed in UK.

Not being able to vote in UK elections is annoying, but as my UK income attracts the UK tax free allowance and my remaining income attracts the Spanish tax fee allowance, I end up getting my UK OAP tax free, which if I were in UK would all be taxed. So not everything is the garden is gloomy.

Be careful this is all about to change. The new DTT WHICH SHOULD BE IN OPERATION BY NEXT YEARS TAX RETURN HERE IN SPAIN will require you to declare your GP on the Spanish tax return. This will almost certainly increase the tax you pay in Spain from zero on just the SP to something on the complete declaration.

We have a French expats service, depending of the Foreign Affairs ministry, nothing else.

I think this has changed or is about to be changed in the past few weeks.

Italy also has MPs for their expat citizens. They are spread around the globe e.g. 1 for S.America, 1 for N.America and so on. Also interesting that in the past the Italian government offered reduced air/rail fares to expats so that they could return from UK/Belgium/Germany/France to vote in General Elections.
At 73 I've never had a vote anywhere!(not that I want one).
'o nonno

That is just for "elections lagislatives", not the general ones.

What do you classify as "general" élections in France? There are presidential, legislative, cantonal, municipal and European ones.
Obviously the Députés for French expats only represent their electorate in the French Parliament. :)

We use to call "general elections" the Presidential ones. The correct word is Presidential.:)

Are you a French Anglophone of a certain age living in Spain?:)
My French OH says that Présidentielles have always been Présidentielles since their creation and he would understand "élections générales" to mean the Législatives.
But then I'm splitting hairs, and going off-topic... ;)
