just a guess but you can go into the players config menu not the film menu and change it from Spainish config to English and stop subtitles coming on by default. what is the dvd player pluged into ie tv and amp just tv because if you cant hear the talking it sounds like the centre channels is not playing try selecting 2 channel sound not dolby digital or dts. is it an english disk you are playing or a spanish one i know in france the subtitles a lot of the time are forced cant switch them off.

As Ka ora says try in the setup menu, or if not take it back under the 14 day warrenty.
It should be connected by a scart lead (wiggle the connections about in case its loose) not a coax cable ?
If you can hear some of it then you should hear it all, also UK discs are the same region as Spanish so should be no problem.

Thank you both for your help. Found the configuration menu on the machine itself and had a play with that. All now seems to be working, fingers crossed!!!
