Default "Don't move to Spain because things are so bad"

At what point does this become a self fulfilling prophecy? I have watched as dozens of people have come to this board looking for advice on moving to Spain only to be told that it is not a good idea right now. Were some of those people living in a fantasy world and needed to give their head a shake? Yes, definitely. But, there are many others that seem to have a plan and a good idea of what they want to do, yet they are being dissuaded from moving to Spain? Why?

We keep being told that businesses are shutting down because of a lack of people. But, if people wanting to move to Spain are being told to stay away, it only makes the situation worse. There are many hundreds of visitors who read this board but never actually post. Even if you managed to scare off a hundred people from moving over, that is jobs that could have been created for the British expats in Spain. A new nursery school could have opened somewhere or a British bar wouldn't have had to close.

Look at it another way. If people are looking to move, why not now? Property prices in Spain are falling and it would be possible to pick up some real bargains. It would be much easier to lock in a low lease for good business premises. Things in the UK aren't that great anyway etc..

Really, aren't you just making things worse by the constant negativity and pessimism?

This is true, but many people are coming over without making sure they ahve sufficient funds to tide them over, or have no real idea what they will be doing here

Really? Who says that?

There are now 3.5 million unemployed people in Spain all desperate for a job and it's getting worse every day.

How is another influx of foreigners going to help that situation?

What makes you think people are put off by what we post Remember the people who bought a bar? they ignored all advice on here and bought one and were back in the UK in about 3 months!

Could look at it another way if we save a few from losing their life savings isn't that good?

So? They shouldn't have a problem either - there are loads of working Brits who are now looking for work as well.

AdrianTO you made few good points there but work in the media here so get see news feed coming in to the news rooms as i am in the IT side off the company

We keep being told that businesses are shutting down because of a lack of people ... my toughts are that it due to lack off holiday makers here in spain and incress compations , bar that where salling drink at inflated prices Now know that briths and irish wont pay rip off price in spain from hotel rooms dinners drinks trips and so on .... with ope off eastren E area wich are cheaper then spain ...

this businesses have o cash flow , and bank wont lead two them , that spnishers and brits

Property prices in Spain are falling and it would be possible to pick up some real bargains. It would be much easier to lock in a low lease for good business premises...... again my toughts here are , open you mouth and there extra 30,000 euros add to the price off house flats lease , price are dropping . people who work there life here and save will be ok but when you income is cut by 70 % like running bar you in troble , layying off good staff cut you over heads , in 100 year time are kids, kids will be payying 100 euros for a drink but take home pay will be about 5,000 euros a week

Ireland 10 years ago was paying just about 3 - 4 euro any hour now it 8 euros , but cost off living gone up
550 euros for any 2 bedroom aptment in 96 now it 1,200 euros for same places

last year i was having few day off and went down the cost to mates and was ask to fine out the price off Apartment for sale , Bedrooms: 2 / Bathrooms: 1 / Toilets: 1 , it was 320,000 euros with non spanish Estate agent , price droped if bought that day with deposit and paper work sing off
the new price had droped two 280.000 , that get me the bank nie paper work and so

down the road with the spanish Estate agent it was 250,000 euros and i got hime down two 225,000 ..... rip off spain ......

last ..................................
low lease for good business premises. Things in the UK aren't that great anyway etc.. not great shap here in spain aswell

Errr...people ask for an opinion....and that's what they get. You cannot blame the messenger when the news is dire. Personally I believe everyone should give everything a go (except for incest and Morris Dancing), and I would encourage all to fulfill their dreams, no matter how foolish. But that's just me.
To aid you on your quest for the positives, I shall henceforth refer to Spain's 15% (official) unemployed as ...85% employed. Don't speak Spanish, no problemo, we can make them understand English if we shout loud enough. Don't have a job, the wife or daughter can always find work standing by any busy road with the thumb out. Run out of cash, just break into the villa next door. Get ill and can't afford a doctor....errr...death?
Oh dear me, I do hope my post hasn't prolonged the crisis here by putting off another 200 wishful fools. As you said, houses could of been sold for post crash prices, businesses saved and now booming, and schools overflowing with the sound of children's laughter mixed with that of all those BMW X5 coming to collect them. A Nelson moment: "Crisis....I see no crisis".
I'm not quite sure as to where you're coming from, but I respectfully suggest that you step away from the bong!

yes you will always get those who dont think things thru but if you really want to settle in spain then you have to take the bull by the horns and go for it! whats the pint of always regretting what you didnt do rather than what you did?
Look out spain we will be coming over in the next couple of years -- we are going to come out with enough money to live for a couple of years without work and see how it goes
