I think that the difference is the level of the dishonesty or crime. From my own point of view, I would tend to protect my offspring from being caught for items offences, whether I disowned them would be a different matter. Serious crimes against a person I would have no hesitation in turning them in and would class anyone who did not to be equally guilty of that crime.
Now if there was a death penalty I would have to rethink my last statement.

We all draw a line where honesty starts and ends. If I found a 50 Euro note on the ground, then I would see it as mine.

(Obviously, if I saw someone drop it, that's a different matter.)
