Default Delays for expats in obtaining Spanish citizenship!

A glitch in the computer system has delayed some foreigners from acquiring citizenship in Spain, for years!

Oops, that does not sound good...

Something disingenuous here.

Quote:

"massive delays and computer glitches are forcing many Brits and other foreigners to return to their countries of origin"

"As a consequence, many people are forced to leave Spain even though they have nationality, and others lose their jobs or find that their residency period is about to run out."

If you're a Brit with a 10 years legal residence (which you need to be eligible to apply for citizenship) then having to sit and twiddle your thumbs waiting for it does not mean you have to leave the country.

For some citizenship is the cherry on their cake but applying for it does not affect or nullify your existing residence so why would you have to leave?

Read the article again and googled the topic a bit, but came up with no further sources, reporting the same thing.

Seems they quote some numbers which quantify a backlog and to what extent the authorities have acted to tackle the problem.

But they claim that expats are being sent home, yet fail to quantify that!

Stark omission I would say, as such, makes the whole report rather dubious...

I guess this might be a problem for those who get nationality after 1 or 2 years' residency and they would need to renew their temporary residency at 5 years while waiting for it to go through?
