Default Dangerous Dogs

I read on another web-site for British expats that the law on this subject changed this year and for example German Shepherd Dogs were specifically included but as it was not clear I contacted the Spanish Embassy in London.

I have been granted permission to disclose the following information and the document they refer to.

I hope it assists those lovers of bigger dogs amongst you (OK I admit I have a strong liking for the GSD)

“A document is enclosed with the list of dog breeds regarded as potentially dangerous included in Annex I of Royal Decree 287/2002 of 22nd March, which develops Law 50/1999 of 23rd December, laying down the requirements to own canine animals deemed to be potentially dangerous.

Please note that Royal Decree 287/2002 constitutes the current national legislation on the subject, but some Autonomous Communities have their own legislation. Those who do not have regulations of their own apply the national legislation.

It also includes the lists of potentially dangerous dogs established by some Autonomous Communities (Castilla y León, Valencia, Cantabria and Extremadura).

The Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Madrid, Galicia, Baleares, Pais Vasco, Castilla-La Mancha, Canarias, Melilla and La Rioja do not have their own legislation or match the national one in relation to breeds considered potentially dangerous.

The local authorities may also approve additional lists of application in the municipality in question. In the attached document there are three examples: the lists established by three Town Halls in the province of Murcia (this Autonomous Community does not have regional legislation on the subject).

The information for the Autonomous Communities of Andalucía, Navarra, Cataluña and Aragón is not yet available and will be provided as soon as possible.

Default Re: Dangerous Dogs

Many of the dogs listed are BANNED in the UK, however are allowed here, BUT you must have a license and MUST keep them muzzled in public. The people who lived near us with American Staffies, never muzzled them, end even let them run free like that.
