I am driving from Santander to CE, can anyone recommend anywhere to stop off and visit on the way down, or recommend any hotels that you know of. Hopefully on this visit I will get a bit nearer to start on my build.

Hi nelliemoo,

SNap! We are doing the same from Bilbao for the first time on the 13thy May, been visiting Ayamonte since 2003 but this is the first time we will have driven down. Dress rehearsal for the big day sometime in October. I shall follow this thread with more than keen interest so far other threads have strongly recommended avoiding Madrid and being very wary at stops of any kind but especially overnight to get secure parking for your car.

Our first thoughts were Bilbao - Burgos - Valladolid - Salamanca (the oldest University in Spain - the world?) and end the first day at Caceres where there is a very nice Parador but that might be a bit expensive or full. There is also a Barcelo and if it is half as good as the ones in Canala or Cristina that will do fine. This is a bit more than half way but gives us an easy run in on the second day and we have to pick our daughter up at Faro in the evening so we want to be sure of our arrival.

Second day we were going to be a bit more adventurous and do Caceres - Badajoz - Jabugo - then across the Campo to Ayamonte.

Regards,;)

John.

Don`t stop for people waving to you from what you think maybe an unmarked police car, Spanish police don`t use them for traffic patrol, it is a scam.
If in doubt drive to a petrol station or similar and park in front of the window, if they are scammers they will give it a miss.
Another one is when you are getting into your car they wait until you get in then will tell you about a flat tyre or something and show you while their mate nicks your bag out of the car.
It`s not regular, but if you know you can then avoid the problem.

Hi
Are they picking out English plated cars? We have friends going over touring Northern Spain this summer. I would like to give them the info on this. It would ruin a holiday wouldn't it. Have you looked at becoming 'Amigos' of the Paradors? It is a discount for seniors! Hope this doesn't insult you!!!

Yes that was my first thought (anything to save the pension) but this particular one is blacked out for seniors during May. They will of course take your money at the full rate but there are only 54 rooms.

They are reasonable and Sue is so lovely and helpful. You have to sign up for the property management part too though, they don't do one off cleans or laundry - I asked her about that when we were there last month.

Hi John

We stayed in a really nice hotel in Palma del Rio in between Seville and Cordoba, and so a relatively easy sprint onto Ayamonte.

Its the Monasterio de San Francisco hotel.

http://www.expedia.co.uk/pub/agent.d...=1/htid=854854

It is much nicer than the 3stars it has. Converted monastery - lovely rooms with galleried ceilings, nice garden and courtyard areas + pool. Just a short stroll is an open air restaurant area, with loads of restaurants and alfresco dining too. Great prices too. No real parking but we found a place just in frint of the door. We actually spent 2 nights there before and will go back. Nice little old-town as well and further down a modern part too. If you eat in the town and find a menu with no prices, ASK first. We got ripped off and after just went to the open air place. Some nice bars too and friendly people, not too touristy.

Have a safe trip down

Jon

Hi there Lynn,

You were asking about golf lessons. Chris the pro at Esuri is a really nice guy and a very good teacher. You won't do better and he's very sympathetic. Try him for a half hour lesson to see if you get on.

John

Thanks for that. Will contact him on our next visit.

Hi

I saw this ad on the internet - lloyds have some flexible mortgages and have won an award as well for best overseas lender.

http://www.lloydstsb-offshore.com/in...logoff_bnr_ims

Reading the text however is a little worrying (quote)

We do not normally provide mortgages for serviced apartments, resorts, golf course properties, student accommodation or former local authority or public housing. Other restrictions related to property use may also apply and details are available upon request.

Whats wrong with Golf appartments - I wonder, that puts them in the same league as public housing/student flats?
