Hi, Good Friday is also a Bank Holiday in Portugal but I'm sure you will find some of the smaller shops open in both countries. We were at the Palm Sunday prosession yesterday in Ayamonte and there were quite a few places open including a very nice deli (La Alacena) that has just opened and is run by a Spanish lady (Lordes) who has been living in the UK for the last 17 years.

Most garages are open 24/7 and have foodstuff, but are a bit pricier. ;-)

These shops are ALWAYS open: (At least untill 23:00)

-Pan Rosi in El salon (Ayamonte)
-Eva, opposite the former Don Diego hotel
-Comestibles Estadio, next to the Jardines del Guadiana complex.
And surely Carrera supermercados at the Isla Canela Marina will be open....

Yes we found that deli when we were out recently and bought some Tapenards as gifts for friends in the UK. She also had a fantastic selection of speciality teas which was very reminiscent of Fortnum and Mason. However my favourite was the Sevilla Marmalade made by a Scottish lady living up in the north east of Huelva Province and exported all over Europe. Well worth a visit on the corner of Calle Lusitania and Hna Amparo cloe to the "Casino".

Calle Lusitania runs parallel to and just behind Plaza de la Ribera. The deli is directly opposite La Casona restaurant. She also sells very nice breads which she cooks on the premises.

I am sure it is your kind of shop very well presented and full of interesting stuff.

The "Casino" is not what you think it should be it is more like an old gentleman sporting club with snooker tables and card tables and I think dominoes. It fronts onto the "Paseo De La Ribera" (Ribera Square) the large square opposite the Marina. The Casino is about the middle of the square on the town side and Hna Amparo runs up the L/H side looking from the marina. La Alacena is the next corner on the left. On the other side of Calle Lusitania is a super restaurant (La Casona) where they do a menu del day for €8 which is three very tasty courses and a small beer.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for the response, I'll take a look at them.

As I said yesterday she has only been open a couple of weeks and unfortunatly she doesn't do chocolates. She does however do very interesting pasta in different shapes and colours, pasta sauces and a good selection of herbs and spices. She also stocks local goats cheeses and packs of Cathedral City cheddar. I think we (John, Kath and me) have now covered her entire stock so pay her a visit next time you are here.

Does anyone know if the Guadiana Market (aka the little shop on Costa Esuri) has reopened yet? Just want to know if I can rely on my morning pan.

No, I think it had a change of owner and is now called something like the "Ayamonte center hotel" or " Hotel Center"
