Just a thought for all you folks shivering in Europe. I wonder what, if anything, happens to the Gulf Stream when you dump 600,000 tones of oil into it?

It must have some effect surely?

Not really, just a drop in the ocean, mostly already dispersed or broken into fairly harmless particles by nature itself.

I'm curious to know what possible effect you may have had in mind ?

600,000 tons of a surfactant, dumped into a water system that is critical to the temperatures across Europe and is dependant on separation of cold and warm waters. I would be surprised if it hadn't had some effect on the stability of that system.... perhaps enough to bring Winter to Europe sooner and further South than normal?

There have been numerous scare stories regarding the Gulf Stream in recent years, but as far as I know in practice they have all been discounted as having had any effect up to the present time.
Much was said about effects of melting Arctic ice,but I don't believe any noticable changes have yet been recorded.

I'm not suggesting any slowdown in the Gulf Stream current, it was just musings about if the oil in the Gulf of Mexico could/would impact on it. I would still say that I would be surprised if that amount of oil had no impact and it doesn't take much of a change in that current, only points of a degree, to have a major impact on European weather.

Oh yes, definitely a lot milder today (although there was still a frost last night in southern parts). Quite a shock on looking at the weather report at 6.30 am to see 7 degrees in Aberdeen !!!
The forecast is that the cold blast returns within a week, so make the most of the milder weather while it lasts.

Very nice and sunny here in London today. But as I mentioned before - the forecast is looking grim from the end of the week...
