COLD

I did not expect to have such a low temperature here around Sevilla specialy inside the house, simply freezing!

Hillybilly Nov 28th 2010 6:33 am

Re: COLD

LOL welcome to Sevilla! I was once told it snows only once in about every 30 years around here...so far it's snowed for 3 out of my 7 winters here and we have frosts and sub-zero temps every year...

Wow I was thinking we will spring temperatures in the winter so I did not worry when I saw there is no heating in any houses in the campo but definitly one is needed or otherwise live in only one room all the family packed together.

stop complaining & put a jumper on.

its 11 degrees in Denia, 15 degrees more than UK tonight!

Re: COLD

I sympathise, having spent two years in Córdoba. It was the heat I was scared of beforehand, but in reality it was the winter really got me down.

Snow - yes, the first year I was there it snowed for the first time in 36 years. The second year I was there it snowed again. I didn't stay for a third.

He's right - it is bitterly cold in the UK tonight (it has been for a few days now).

Yes but the houses in UK are heated and sometimes overheated, the best thing is to be outside all day outside is nicer than inside except today a chilly wind was everywhere.

Re: COLD

In UK houses you have central heating, carpets, insulation, damp course. In Spain they build their houses to keep cool, lots of tiles and draughts! It doesnt matter about the temperature outside when you're sitting indoors, its expensive and hard work to get a Spanish house warm and cosy, so its usually just one room with everyone huddled around the fire!

Jo

I have to admit that in Madrid I found different places had differing ways of coping with the cold. Modern apartment blocks had shared centralised central heating, and were over-powering in some cases. Older blocks (although not freezing) were a tad chilly when winter was at its peak. However I know that detached villas/chalets were often under-powered in this respect. Some of the detached villas where the rich people lived, were in fact the worse places to be once the mercury dipped below zero.

poolboy Nov 28th 2010 7:18 am

Re: COLD

spot on, I have a thermometer measuring inside & out temps.

at a villa if unused & unheated it is warmer outside than in - to warm up initially I open the windows as its stale air which is cold.

currently (in a flat) it is 12 deg out, 20 deg in. you don't half feel it as it was hot & sunny today, soon as the sun goes down the temp drops 10 degrees.

to anyone in the UK - keep safe & warm, drive carefully tomorrow.

Re: COLD

When I first came to Spain, the winters didn’t bother me and felt a lot warmer than the UK. But I must admit that I get very cold now and need a lot of heating in the house.

I often wonder if my skin has got browner and thinner at the same time. Or have the winters got colder?

Whichever is true, I know that at least three cold months lie ahead.

Re: COLD

I have never been so cold as my first few nights in spain, I slept with all my clothes on in a sleeping bag, and was still frozen. But come the summer, had to sleep on the cold tiles on the floor to keep cool.

My husband commutes and he came over yesterday. He says its freezing in the UK, but the house there is lovely, warm and cosy. He's cold here tonight and sitting almost on top of the gas heater at the moment. He much prefers the UK in the winter cos its geared for the cold!

Exactly right.
It's beautiful outside here in my part of the UK, with a nice crisp covering of snow.
Lovely and cosy inside, with a property geared up for cold weather.

In fact I'm as as snug as a bug in a rug, and will likely delay my return to Spain until Almond Blossom time or thereabouts.

Now had I still had my place in the Canaries, it might have been a different story.

Re: COLD

It is very cold here in NW Galicia - 0.2 degrees at the moment. But I must admit our children have had a wonderful day with all the snow. I read in last week's local paper that there was a nine car pile up. Thirty seconds of hail turned the road into a skating rink and they had to get the snow ploughs out to clear the road of the hail.

Trouble is that if there is a slight bit of ice on the road the school bus will not come and collect the kids - they are happy, I am not.

Keep warm everyone.

Even with the torrential rains, I'd still rather be here than in the UK. They may be better geared for cold, but they have to be as you need that heating 6 months of the year. Here, it's rare for us to need the stove for more than three months.

That's the way it is done in many houses in Spain. My house is in the mountains of Granada province and is BL%%dy freezing in the winter. There is no suitable central heating we can have so we just heat the room we are in. The house has a selection of a woodburning stove, three portable gas fires and an assortment of electric heaters.

Welcome to Spain!

Anyway it is a bit of nostalgy memories for me as I come originally from Macedonia very very cold country in the Balkans and when I was small due to electricity restrictions we use to heat only one room so the room was meant from breakfast, lunch , siesta, hopmework and dinner.

You see, that's why I love it here. I have seen whole summers in the UK go with just one single perfect summer's day. In the last 5 years I was there, we didn't see 15 perfect days in the whole of those 5 summers. We saw more perfect days in Jan & Feb, when it makes no odds. A typical summer's day was grey and miserable. You would put up with a grey autumn, a miserable winter and a sh*tty spring, waiting, waiting for the summer, and what happened? We'd get a taste, - just to let us know what we were missing, then the bars would slam shut again.

Here, no matter how bad the winter, I know I will get a good spring, a faultless summer and a delightful autumn. I say that puts Spain streets ahead!

Re: COLD

I am off to the UK on Thursday for a few days and am dreading the cold - houses may be warm but what about icy roads and pavements, disruption to public transport and possibly flights, etc, etc.

It may be wet and comparatively chilly here in Spain at present, but at least I don't have all that to put up with.

In summer my windows stay closed until the sun goes down, in winter it's the exact opposite, the windows stay open until the sun goes down and then the gas fire goes on. At the moment just having the gas fire on low in the sitting room seems to keep the whole house comfortable, the layout is pretty open plan so we leave the main bedroom and bathroom doors open and close the doors of the bedrooms we're not using. As it gets colder we may have to turn the fire up but so what!

Re: COLD

Of course your flat roof leaking every time it rains is par for the course.

Luckily we are not alone....in this part of Spain, every house has a flat roof and everybody's flat roof leaks.

We fix it every year the Spanish way - stick buckets under it until it stops.

Or, if it isn't tiled you can do what we did and cover it with a fibreglass mesh, and paint that on with a couple of coats of white gaucho paint.

Result, no leaks and the house is cooler in summer.

It is crazy paved, it's a roof terrace. The main flat roof does not leak, thank goodness, although the terrace leaks onto the dining table. :D

I have seen a silicone solution used for tiled terraces, and the water runs off without wetting provided there is a bit of a slope.

Re: COLD

We have lots of snow, temperatures way below zero and blizzards forecast for tomorrow.
Unfortunately one poor little lost sole hasn't seen the weather forecast.
The local North East TV has just shown a somewhat cold and confused Hoophoe Bird hopping about in the Winter snow up here in the frozen North, a long way from home.
I believe they have occasionally been seen in the South of England in better weather, but never up here in mid-Winter to the best of my knowledge.

Already had -18C in Wales

Report says snow's on the way. Good fun for some, but it's going to be hard for older people in cold homes

The cold weather is expected to persist all week, as north-easterly winds develop and make it feel even colder. "As we move through the week, there's a chance of snow showers and flurries in London," a Met Office spokeswoman said. "It's bitterly cold and there will be no let-up."

And here! As I sit in my little centrally heated, double glazed, cavity wall insulated, insulated loft house, snug as bug here as well. Haven´t really seen any snow here, and I´ve been out walking every day lately as it has been lovely and sunny. Keep the snow up your way, and I can stand lots of this, a bit of cold is fine by me.
