.... and another thing, when I was a teenager (many moons ago) it was the hole in the Ozone layer (its been found since that this hole has throughout history opened and closesd at intervals) that was gonna let all the heat out and it was global cooling we were all ranting on about. That didnt make quite so much money for the governments tho - they've got better with their spin this time round!!!!

Umm, well, a hole in the ozone doesn't let stuff out, it lets too much UV in.

As for global warming, it's precisely the fact that not all the earth will heat up is why they refer more to change.

Green taxes are a great way for the government to extract more money, and is a handy stick to beat us with. Having said that, I do think it is a real phenomenon, the only question being how bad will it get, and can we reduce the effect? If not, and it does go all the way, it's going to get a lot worse than most people realise. I'm just grateful I will be long gone before the effects start to really kick in.

When I was at school we did a project on the ozone layer and its hole. It was definately global cooling, I remember drawing a picture of a snowman standing next to a palm tree! and this hole was likened to a window letting the warm air out!! We had to stop using aerosols etc... remember??? Or am I showing my age

The earth is constantly changing, always has, always will, so in that respect yes its a real phenomenom, but I dont believe we have any control over it, in fact I think its rather arrogant of the human race to think that we have!!! And all this global warming nonsense is just a money spinner, nothing more! In fact if you think about it, of course its warming otherwise we'd all be living in an iceage still!!!!

I can remember at school we were taught that the temperature of the earth has gone up and down throughout its history and can remember when we going into an ice age in the 60s. That never materialised and when I have asked people who should know what happened, they now say they didn't have enough information then. Problem is they never seem to have enough until after the event.

Perhaps they should stick to telling us what the forecast is for yesterday. They seem to lost their fantastically advanced computer as the Met people don't seem to mention it any more.

Its right enough, they spend half the time telling us what the weathers already been and why it rained here or was fine there.
Then they get around to saying what the weather is now, which I think most people can work out anyway with a quick glance through their window.
Eventually they may even tell us what it might or might not be like in a few hours time, providing of course this that or the other doesnt happen.
"Backcast" might be more appropriate.

Wonder if anyone remembers Ian McGaskell.
Every time he came on I told myself to try and concentrate on what he was saying.
Every time he'd finished his forecast, a few minutes later, I didnt have a clue what he'd been on about.

In that case theres no great problem,.......simply a matter of moving to a comfortable area and growing crops where they are best suited.

Spain will be a desert and the Sun Seekers will be heading for the Shetlands,..............

But hey, what a fantastic moneyspinner!!!! increased taxes for CO2 emissions, green taxes, petrol taxes, whole industries have sprung up on the back of this, theres even a movement now (veganism of course) thats suggesting that we have too many cows on the planet and their "emissions" are fuelling global warming FFS!

I'm not completely against all of the hype, yes we cause a lot of pollution and its good that we're discovering cleaner and more efficient ways of producing energy. But CO2 that humans are generating causing global warming??? give me a break. In any case, every school kid knows that CO2 is used by plants and they turn it into oxygen! So plant more trees and if there is too much CO2 in the air then they should grow really big! and then we'll have too much oxygen and like I said in a previous post, if the globe wasnt warming then we'd be living in an ice age!!

Thats part of the problem Jo, over 200,000 acres of rainforest are cut and burned every single day worldwide, and its the rainforests that provide that conversion ability..... we are effectively killing the very means needed to convert the co2.

True and I guess since they couldnt stop us doing that, they're trying the other approach????

However the way I look at it, the world is bigger than we are and has been around alot longer, it will always change with or without us. I always try to look at the bigger picture. and even those rainforests werent around at the beginning and wont be around at the end, not because of humans but because nothing is forever. There have been over 500 iceages in the history of the world and I've no doubt that they'll be 500 more. When you consider these ice ages last for 1000s of years, it makes it all seem rather insignificant.

Meanwhile, we're all happy to jump in our cars and drive to the supermarket, work, taking our kids to school.... Use lights, central heating, air con...!

We are speeding it up Jo, we are speeding up the death of the planet. Its funny but if you actually open your mind a little to what's going on you will see that man is slowly destroying everything in its path, animals are becoming extinct, habitats lost for ever and landscapes being reshaped for the worse, but to justify it we come out with a whine about the fact that governments are trying to over tax us!

just when I thought you and I were agreeing for once Matt LOL!!! look at the bigger picture! If things didnt become exinct then we'd still have dinasaurs. Whatever we do on this planet it will change it, everything changes. New things will come along... but not within the next 100/1000 years, things move slowly. We are what we are and you cant change human nature. If we dont destroy ourselves, summat else will. I personally think humans will probably fight themselves into extinction anyway!! One big war and ..... BANG! Then it'll be the turn of the cockroaches to rule the world LOL

Thats where you and I will always disagree Jo, I am an optimist, I feel that this world is worth fighting for, its a lovely place and its the only one we have so I shall continue to do as much as I can.

I also think that attitude is a little arrogant Jo, it assumes that this is all here for us....

No, its not all here for us at all!! Thats my point, we're just here at the mo, we'll be gone long before the earth, and everything we do on it will be nothing but archiology/palientology in millenia to come!

The world is a lovely place... but its bigger than us and it will change with or without us, it always has and it always will!

Man certainly cant control the destiny of the planet.
Short term measures regarding CO2 may have some temporary effect, but far greater forces can come into play at anytime.
It just needs one volcanic eruption of mega proportions to just about wipe everything out, block all the sunlight and cover the planet with ash and dust for a couple of years.
Alternatively an asteroid strike could have disastrous effects, possibly alter the polarisation, move the icecaps, or much worse.
What will be,will be
Whatever ,if anything, survives such a disaster, could well eventually evolve into different species and lifeforms to those we now know,in order to adapt and survive in a totally different environment.
