My first post, so be gentle with me!! I've just been told about btlink. They claim to have cheaper call charges and ADSL access than Telefonica, although you still have to pay the Telefonica line rental. Does anyone have any experience of them, good or bad?

There are many adsl options out there, maybe one that allows set or limited access suits your needs. I use internet access a lot for work so I need a good reliable bandwith, I wouldn't consider anyone other than Telefonica for that access. Telefonica has a bad attitude, downright ignorant at times but if you want the best adsl available they are the only way to go.
If you go to the Telefonica web page there is a section under adsl where you can enter your telephone number to see if adsl is available for you, you will be told instantly there on the website. Some nodes do not have adsl access as yet although these are becoming less all the time, the other issue is the distance you are located from the nearest telefonica node, you might be too far away for a reliable adsl connection.
Hope this helps

I would always reccomend when someone applies for adsl access ask for a router 'not a modem which is generally supplied', just tell them you sometime have more than one computer connected 'saves having to explain why you want a router', if you want wireless just make sure it is a wireless router 'generally now are'. You might need to pay for the router but check as there are offers all the time where this sometimes is included. A router will give you a better connection and will also allow you two options on connecting, by cable and wireless. Someone with a laptop comes to your house and hasn't a wireless card then they can connect with a cable.
These wireless routers are now very simple to set up, your computer will need to have a wireless card though.... just check. I usually connect Macs up for people 'not as my job BTW' although I have done a few PC's and * generally * the newer machines you just plug in and away you go, or with very little change to some settings. Some wireless routers come with the wireless option set to inactive, you will probably need to activate this, that generally just involves placing a paperclip into a hole for a second or so.
All the instructions come in Spanish, so it does help to understand some of the language.
I have a non wirless router from telefonica but I have a Apple Airport hub plugged into it, I run the 3 computers and a printer as well as well as a scanner, all just runs through the wireless connection so I don't have to get off the sofa to do anything except take the paper out of the printer. If you had a bigger house then you could just use a couple of the smaller airport express units 'just plug into a power socket' and the wireless connection would be extended around the house.
Hope this helps
