You can get €2000 off a new car but it appears that it has to be a "green" one - electric or hybrid. The details should be clearer in a few days.

The old car has to be 12 years old or more.

Call me a cynic, but as the government are coughing up 50% and the manufacturers the other 50%, (up to €2,000) I can´t see the dealer giving you much for your motor. Although it has to be over 12 years old, so probably worthless anyway!

And you certainly won't get any of the discounts you might have got for a straight purchase.

I see the new Nissan Leaf electric cars are priced around about the 30 k mark in the UK.
Seems a bit steep considering the size of them, though they're probably taking advantage of the fact that the govt are offering buyers a 5k grant towards a one.
Considering the price,I think Nissan must be getting more benefit from the grant than the buyers.

I hate to just sound like I'm knocking an idea just for the sake of it, but if I understand correctly, if for example, I have an old car then I hand it to the dealer for it to be scrapped and then I get 2K off the price of a new 30K hybrid/electric vehicle.
I just can't see a stampede of people waiting to grab this deal.
Am I being too negative or misunderstanding what's on offer ?

I think the car has to be up to 22500 euros for the scheme to apply but who on earth is going to go for this on the basis of getting an electric or hybrid vehicle. Where would it be charged outside of the large cities. It is a non starter. However I would like to see more information when it is available.

The cap is 25K but there is no limit for hybrid or electrical cars.

The link was posted some time ago.

Cars with emissions up to 160 qualify plus all hybrid/electric cars.

The cap is 25k for normal cars and no limit for hybrid/electric cars.

Does that mean just small cars?

No, it includes an awful lot of cars. 160 g of CO2 is band G on the UK car tax range and is over halfway up the scale. It would include 5 series BMWs for example (of course that would be above the 25K cap)..

They have set a surprisingly high figure. 130 overall is the average figure that all car manufacturers need to achieve to meet the latest regulations..

That´s good but I expect it will be very complicated to actually do.
