The sale of a car involves the tax "Impuesto de Matriculación", ( the Registration Tax ) which must be paid to the local tax office . Is it the case that the dealer has not included this in the purchase price and is expecting you to pay it ?
On a new car, this tax is included in the manufacturers advertised price and is paid by the dealer. Unless you read the invoice carefully, you would not know you had even paid it. That's one of the reasons that people who bring a car to Spain moan about the "import duty" when it is, in fact, the tax that everyone pays when a car is first registered in Spain.

In the case of many of the new eco friendly cars, the tax is zero. It is based on CO2 emissions.
