Another solution to the problem of what to do with the live criminal is to let the police come, take him away so his/their fixed address can be established for a court appearance, then take your time to decide sensibly what you really intend to do with that knowledge. You will always remember THEIR face, but they will have probably forgotten yours within days.
As to Eastern European citizens--I have probably met more than all of you put together as I have lived there for several years. When I lived in Spain for a year there were many nice ones there working and earning an honest living, except for the gypsy girls at Valencia bus station, and those in a Murcian shopping street-- both sets were trained thieves. There is a big trade in taking girls to Western Europe to work as prostitutes or thieves [Different girls, different training]. The males usually go to Western Europe to work legally, but it is a common "joke" in bars and cafes that joining the EU helped reduce the crime statistics in many Eastern areas.
My anti-burglary plan when I return to Spain is to live in an apartment block with Spanish neighbours-it worked last time, and the Brits who had lovely expensive houses at the edge of the town had all been burgled. Sad but true.
