I should be so lucky ;-)

If the rumours I've heard are true, they are probably rounding up a Posse on Facebook to come and slap me down with their witty comments.

Ok lets get back on topic, who thinks Faith schools should be banned and why ?

I'll start by stating yes they should be banned, if parents want their children to have religious education they should provide it themselves.

Does anyone think different ? if so please share the reasons why.

Actually thats probably a thread killer as no one in their right mind can argue that Faith schools serve any useful purpose.

For someone who never tires of telling people how misguided they are you don't seem to be very understanding of peoples posts. Firstly J2 is playing around with Bipat's nick, secondly she is querying why Bipat is defending Muslims given that she is married to an Indian who is apparently Hindu and she finds that a bit strange given the communal violence that goes on in India between those two communities (10,000 deaths in communal violence since 1950) that Bipat is defending Muslims hence the 'closet muslim' comment.
Oh and its pretty evident who she is talking to as she starts off her post with the pun on Bipat's name

What puzzles me is how come some liberals (i.e You) are unable to understand that some people dislike Islam quite strongly (my case) and don't think they are all extremists oh and don't need to read the Daily Wail for negative reports on Muslim issues.

I've said it before I would be quite happy if we banned ALL religions as they have been (and still are) the biggest contributors to many of Humankind's problems.

Here we go the generalisation again. I have never defended Muslims per se. Just pointed out there are many who do not fit the picture of radicals or extremists. For example the school which started off this particular discussion. Why shouldn't anyone wear a headscarf if they want to??? The queen wears one often enough!!

There are many branches of the Muslim religion just as there are in the Christian religion why not read about them. In Spain, above all, I would have thought you might respect their history of learning and literature.

I obviously abhor the practices of many modern Muslims and wish that more Muslims would stand up and say the same. As I mentioned before the constant negativity is causing many of the young to rebel (as the young do:().
We return next month to India we will be met by our Muslim taxi driver who brings us home cooked food at Eid and Christmas, sweets at Diwali, who loves his wife and daughters (who do their 'own thing' and don't wear any head covering) just like his father before him; There are around the world millions like him. Realising this fact does not make me a "closet Muslim" and ignoring the atrocities that go on.

The idea of Academy schools seemed a good idea at the time. Unfortunately, it seems to have been taken over by people who either want to milk the profits or ultra religious groups...or both.

Ofsted should pull out it's finger.

Yes, religion should be kept out of schools. It is the 21st Century.

I can agree with you there, but I think it is too simplistic to just say ban them. The Christian faith schools have been around so long and are valued often for their discipline and learning ethos, you mentioned India, surprisingly for the same reason the convent schools there have always been popular (with parents) for the same reasons.

Re: British standards ???

@Bipat

When one poster is busy criticising all muslims and you (as a true liberal) starts pointing out that not all Muslims are practicing some of the more unenlightened aspects of the religion then unfortunately it does come across as defending them.

I know you have many times pointed out you do not approve some of the barbaric customs that religion has.

I have no problems with Muslims in general like many on here I've lived and traveled a lot in Muslim countries and always found them to be perfectly normal people with the same hopes as most of us for a better life etc.

My beef is with their (and others) religions

Re: British standards ???

Yes I'm quite aware that the standards are sometimes much higher in some faith schools but the real answer is that the state should be providing these high standards in schools.

Oh and FWIW I've spent quite some time both in India and Pakistan and believe it or not Afghanistan way back in the 60-70's
