The OP's original statement is possibly true, but if you call them they will do it, I have had experience of it. Also what are the chances of you breaking down anyway ?

Worse case is all you have to do is book a ferry trip (from UK) and cancel it and show them the booking receipt, they are not going to phone the ferry up and ask if you got on the boat.

They cover anyone in every country. Just phone their freephone number and quote your UK address and what you want. Its about 98 euro for husband and wife/partner. Each of you gets a card and it is you that is covered not the car so you can drive any other motor no problems. You have to telephone their website for online only supports German addresses. When you do remember to use 0049 the German code and being 0800 its free on Skype. When they answer just ask for English. Takes a few minutes and its done.
