Being Hacked
#16
Okay, so i've changed my password on here. Guess what, I had the same password as my ebay account that i havent used for months. Hmmmmmm. interesting. Especially since I left this account open all night the other night, by accident of course.
Funny though, coz my settings are so high I dont get any spam. seriously. NOw I do though. Grrrrrr.
So I clicked opened the mail and on the link. I did not give a name, a number an email address anything. Except my email addres will have shown.
Do you think im safe to continue banking online. Specially with what im in the middle of doing at the moment (dont even want to say it outloud, but we all have it common here, wink ).
Talking about me pooping myself. Im really not well and so i can think straight.
Im so angry too. not like me at all. Grrrrrrrrr (you're all scared now).
thanks for your advice folks, all of you. Can you answer my query in this please?
Ta very much.
yours
ps: ive closed my ebay account. im not interested in using it anymore anyway.

You only get emails though your browser you set your email account in, these are stored when it is not open and get delivered when it is.
I usually get 10 or 20 spammy ones a day but just delete them.

1. Jandy44 .... I too have Norton and get the "Norton Spam" message. The emails don't come from Norton. It is your antivirus/email scanning program (Norton) telling you that this looks like a "spam email" Its all normal and its doing the job you ask it to. Email scanning can be turned off if you don't like it. Some email scanning programs filter the post and put "junk/spam" in a separate folder. Yours just marks it and lets you decide if its rubbish or not.
2. ... If you get lots of spam emails you will continue to do so. Once you are on these mailing lists you are there for ever. People buy and sell these lists with millions of email addresses on them. The theory being if we send 100,000 emails and we get one person to give up some delicate information it will have been worth the while. You can get programs to filter the stuff out as above but you are still sent the emails. Only way out is to get a new email address. If you do get a new email choose something complicated that cant be guessed. johnsmith@??? is a complete waste of time. You will get spammed from the 1st day. But if you choose jo2hn5sm4ith@??? you will fair a lot better.
3. Mrs Teapot ... I had the exact same email I expect. It said you owed for a mobile phone you bought on eBay? You have nothing to worry about. If you don't have a Paypal account and you didn't share a password or bank details then just ignore it. If this is all new get used to it. I get maybe 50 emails a day trying to get me to give up bank details or wanting to sell me male enhancement pills! Its a way of internet life now. You get to recognise them after a while.
Hope this helps someone

I have websites so know a lot about this ! and you can buy programs that all day and night go of merrily finding emails !!
It operates like a search engine and will gather someting incredible like 100,000 email addresses a day or something !
So any email address which they are all recognised by the ruling factor which governs emails ie; Bigpete@hotmail.com Beasty@yahoo.com
Do you notice anything teapot ?? yep the @ no matter what the address it will have that . so now your email has been spidered like mine has and like billions of others have and are being as we sleep !!!
So now lets say out of the billion of people in the world we know 50% are thick or gullable so to speak
So they get a email and it could say something like ?URGENT ACTION NEEDED
Dear Sir, We are updating our records and find that you owe us £ 20 in registration fees ! You have 7 days to pay or we will take you offline and commence legal proceedings which will give you a bad credit referance and could prevent you from obtainning credit in the future..
Please click [B]here [B][ To find out more ..
Now lets say out of the 50% 25% are male , that is roughly several million who will go Hmmmmm heck best check this out i dont want to be blacklisted !! correct ?
Now they have you on there site !!! Now lets tell them to ring this 0901 number (calls charged at £ 1 a minute ) so now we have 2 million people ringing a answer phone that says something like "All our operators are busy please hold ! ) keep them there say 2 minutes
They could even say something like oh sorry Mrs teaPot we have made a mistake you dont owe us sorry , you will be relieved and they have made there money ! You wouldnt complain as your so relieved u owe nothing ..
Hmmmmmmm heck i feel a new business idea brewing
This is so easy lol

Just wanted to say I'm really sorry to hear you're feeling poorly, Mrs Teapot
Everything always seems worse when you're not feeling well, but it seems that everyone on here is being really reassuring.
Personally, I'm really good at panicking about things like this, but thankfully Mr brisca is the level headed one (and he understands computers, which helps!
)
Hopefully by now, you're tucked up in bed and have stopped worrying about this.
Hope you feel much better in the morning.
Take care, and keep your chin up.
Very best wishes, from
Sam.

Well you have all been very reassuring, so im still here. just. I changed my password.
Just shows then just HOW high my security is etc, coz i never get spam mail and my middle name is WWW! (oops im giving personal info away
).
Well, I guess i'll get thousands now and send them to spam bucket. Actually I am notorious that if I dont recognise an address I send it to the spam bucket, and have unwittingly sent friends to there. So it goes to show they got me whilst i was feeling unwell.
If you knew what id been up to today you would be worried too!
I was meant to be celebrating tonight, not getting stressed out. (Er, those two lines sentences connected btw, wink, wink).
The two lines above involve the following subjects (this is in code, i think you'll get it).

There are several sites which give information on various email scams. This is one of them:

It looks like this is the one that Mrs Teapot received:

I had one recently, pertaining to be a building society. (With whom I do NOT have an account.)
I typed out their website to look for the "contact me" section and clicked on it. There was a whole page advising that there were bogus emails going around and to forward to them which I did.
Have you got spyware protection Mrs T? I regularly run this and also anti virus protection which I also check regularly. Always best to keep an eye on your current status.

Do a search for mailwasher pro. Install this and you can deal with all the junk before it gets to your account.
I can also recommend AVG over norton as mentioned earlier by Mitzyboy.

Hehehe, i love those scam emails, how anyone falls for them i dont know. Actually had one from paypal this morning, they didnt even try to spoof the link! The spelling is poor and its just obviously fake.
As for the nigerian scams, take a look at www.scambuster419.co.uk it'll keep you reading for hours, its hilarious. Set up a yahoo email address or something under false details then reply to them and start a right epilogue off.
As for the scam bank emails i generally click the links then launch denial of service attacks on the servers hehe. This is running a script that will automatically fill the form in and submit it, then do it again, and again. Have the script running simulatenously off a few PC and you bombard the site with more than it can handle.. oh and it fills the form in with some death threats and nasty words flooding out their treasure.
As others have said, unless youve sent any personal details and passwords over on a spoofed website then you dont need to worry. Scam emails are flowing round the net all the time its part of being online today sadly.

I you make a suggestion here. instead of using a microsoft based email client ie outlook express or outlook use Mozilla Thunderbird is by far the best email client and has a very good spam filter built it. Spam has not been a problem for me every since i started using it. I have 3 emails accounts which used to get me about 40 plus spams a day now none. the links within the spam email take you to a spoof web site one that looks identical to the real one but remember all these people are trying to do is gain your log on information. their system is set up in the following manner you log on to there web site whilst it is really loging on to your one. but if it is a banking one that asks for memorable infomation the log on will keep telling you its wrong until you have provided them with all of the word and password. The best policy is to ignore all bank ebay palpal type emails that ask you to log on no institution will ask you to do this.
Secound note is that if you are running a microsoft windows based machine it is flawed before you even switch it on. i would suggest saving up for a mac we dont get virus`s they run like a cham and continue to do so and they look pretty. I had never looked at macs and not so long ago whilst debating getting a new computer i started looking at macs i got one and im am not going back to pcs with windozs on them and am in the process of migrating all the other computers in the house.

I had exactly the same one from ebay, i copy and pasted to ebay and asked if they had sent this which they told me know and to never give any passwords etc etc. Also i was a bit suspicious as the spelling on the email was crap (a bit like mine really)
Always delete them when they come, also if ebay has sent you a email it will always be in your ebay inbox as well which these scams are never not xxxxx
