Beauty Therapy Tenerife
Hi I am thinking about moving to Tenerife. I am currently self employed in UK and work as a beauty therapist and hold UK NVQ3 City & Guild Qualifications. Can I use these qualifications to continue my self employment in Tenerife or do I need alternative ones to work there legally?
Many thanks

Well if the UK leaves with no deal then it might be the case that UK qualifications are not officially recognised. However in your line of work I doubt the qualifications are so much important as experience and language abilities

A friend lived and worked as a Therapist in Tenerife from 2011-2013. The pay was dire, she could only get part time work and in the end left and moved back to the UK

Thanks for your reply. Like anything self employed it depends on what business model is used and individual circumstance as to how successful a business venture is. I'm looking for information on what is legally required to work self employed as a beauty therapist from what qualifications are required through to any local licences etc that are needed.

I doubt you need anything to be a beauty therapist. Remember you may well have to pay about €240 a month whether you''ve had a punter or not.

I don't think you need qualifications in Spain for this type of work if you are self employed. But you will need to register as self employed which means paying around 250 -270 euros a month irrespective of any business you may have or not. Bit of a shock for Brits who only declare taxable profits. The fact that it is not a regulated business in terms of licences and accreditations means there are a lot of cheap places offering this service. You would be advised to come over and do some research before declaring it a viable business I think

Thanks. From my research so far I do not think that it is a regulated industry in Tenerife. Yes very different the month tax for self employed. I'm trying to work my way through exactly what the fees are as there was a reform 2018/9 but am unclear as to whether the rules have come into play as of yet. Of course research and viability study are always the way forward - hence my questions.

To be honest Spain is very different from UK in regard to things like this. Research online won't be a waste of time but you need to pop over and take a look. Where I live there are a huge number of shops offering beauty treatments from nails, hair removal, etc. They seemed to be staffed by young girls and don't appear to be in any way exclusive. In other words competition is high and unless you were in an area with foreigners I would imagine its difficult if you don't speak spanish( maybe you do).

Thank you. Yes you make good points and I understand where you are going with that. My situation is a little different to the regular beauty therapist. I specialise in a few niche beauty treatments so wouldn't be in direct competition with the majority of salons or therapists. I also will have clients combine a holiday with their treatments so I am not solely reliant on clientele from the local market etc.

If it's like in France, this monthly sum represents Social Security contributions for healthcare, pension,...., not Tax as such, which would be declared separately. As said, it must be paid, even if you have no clients....
As suggested, research the actual business potential on the spot - in reply to similar enquiries in the past, the France forum advised that many beauty salons are closing down, as clients are tightening their belts and spending less on "luxury" services.
Good point concerning your language skills....
Members may sound pessimistic, but they're realistic, and fore-warned is fore-armed!
P.S. Your post crossed with mine! You should make enquiries about your employment status with the organisers of the holidays where your treatment would be included.

A niche market makes sense as you say but sounds like you would need to attract wealthier clients and therefore location will be key. The downside being wealthy foreigners live in expensive places making your rent higher. So all in all I would say you need good finances and a good knowledge of the different areas available.
As other poster mentioned : it is not a monthly tax you are paying. You are paying access to SS and various other state insurances . So the 250- 270 is a separate monthly payment from all other costs. That is quite high payment in Spain where average wages sit around 20,000 €

Thanks. Yes I understand that the SS payments for self employment is plus the tax on income. I cannot find up to date info on what it is. Did the tiered rates come into force in Jan 2019? This obviously makes any new business start up finances a little easier in the early stages.
