just spotted this thread here....
loosing channels is down to a few things
dish needs realigning
cable connectioned need to be checkedwater in the cable - bad cable
LNB needs replacing
box is going (noticed many older grundigs failing recently)
bad weather / heavy cloud / rain
nothing to do with whether the phone line is connected or not - this does not affect the reception of free tv channels on a sky box
get an installer out and have it checked out - it may have been blown out of alignment with the winds we have had - i am still getting calls from people who did not know about the storms as they have been in the UK!

Hi sat and pc guy
thanks for your reply,
we are guessing it cant be the lnb as the whole thing is about 2 months old...
also, some of the channels are fine, so i guess that means it wouldnt be the alignment?
and
we had the most horrific high winds a while back and everything was fine for weeks after, this only started happening the other day when it was really sunny...!
so i guess that leaves the box or the cable? is there anything we can do ourselves to find out? we dont wanna call anyone just yet cause everything seems to cost about £1M round here

OH AND it seems to happen randomly- sometimes its fine, then it goes wrong and with random channels, and not all at the same time

thanks v much again!!

some channels are transmitted from strong signal satellites....
bbc itv are transmitted from a very signal specif / weak for spain satellite...and require exacting alignment
as do the 30 or so channels that are on the North beams - like Sky3, Hallmark, SkySportsNews Eurosport2 and the Sky Movie channels.
Check the LNB and metal feedhorn (thats attached to the LNB) for any NASTIES that may be lurking inside (be careful when doing this - do not prod into the LNB, but if there is something in there try and get it out with someting soft and NON METALLIC)
if it just happens to be one the same channels, and these are the weaker BBC ITV C4 E4 channels then it will be someting i mentioned in my first post.

go along the cable and see if the cable is damage, or if the installers used two peices of cable and joined them together and check the connection - water in the cable or conenction can cause major signall loss and possible LNB and dodybox problems.
if it is on random channels and random times then some NASTIE will be in the LNB...i get this when people call me up an say they loose FIVE on a 1.8m dish...impossible unless there is something in the LNB blocking the signal.
