Barcelona/Civil War article
Some of you may be interested in this travel piece from the Guardian

Of course for real Civil War history you can't beat Madrid. I'm now trying to convince a friend of mine who lives there, to do something like this part-time - he's always been interested in the history and this subject, and even knows places that are still strongly republican in the city.

It is hard to imagine, standing at the top of La Rambla, in the multicoloured swirl of half-dressed tourists, Mexican hats and Gaudí paraphernalia, that it was here in Barcelona on 19 July 1936 that the opening shots were fired in what was to become the Spanish civil war. Harder still to picture the anarchists of the CNT (Confederación Nacional del Trabajo) union running a city that is now firmly under the thumb of dour Catalan nationalists, or to believe that what is soon to be a gigantic Apple store was once the Communist party HQ and was draped with vast portraits of Lenin and Stalin.

Yes I believe there is an enormous ground swell of interest in the Spanish Civil War from many sources.
One of the leading experts is a Brit - Paul Preston who has written many books on the topic.
There are also tours in the Madrid area -

A curator site

and a new book site selling a range of books on Spain

Re: Barcelona/Civil War article
Yes Anthony Beevor has written several non-fiction books on WW2 including 'Stalingrad' Not sure why you introduced that one given the thread is on the Spanish Civil War.
His SCW book is The Battle for Spain (published in 2006, which is a revised and updated version of The Spanish Civil War pub. in 1982)
Whilst it is widely acclaimed it is very detailed and at over 500 pages is for those you really want every detail.

I was merely pointing out that AB is regarded as the pre-eminent war history writer at the moment and his previous epic set a new standard and was followed by his revised SCW history. Yes it is big and at times turgid when he is describing in detail the movement of Brigades however I think it is worth the price and effort for the opening few chapters and the detail that can be gleaned slowly.

Re: Barcelona/Civil War article
Yes without a doubt Beevor is "the pre-eminent war history writer at the moment" and was in yesterdays Sunday Times Top 10 best sellers list with his 'D-Day'
Good synopsis of the SCW book here
http://books4spain.com/blog/the-unde...ish-civil-war/
His latest 'The Second World War' has taken a bit of a panning though with its
"...oddities and imbalances".
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012...-beevor-review
One consistent thing about Beevor is his impartiality and without politcal rhetoric which typically crops up in many SCW books especially.
