Hire car is OK to cross border so no problem with that.

Anything out of the usual/special to see either end.

And is Argeles and Colioure worth a visit?

Argeles is OK but my money would be on Bunyuls sur mer, it has a nice old style town the same can be said For Port Vendres, were as Argeles is very hectic and has half of France in it. Make sure you Tank up on Portbou on the Spanish side there is no border control the buildings are there but unmanned, Lots of wine little overpriced food.

Well if your doing a direct back from Carcassonne then just stay on the Peage and don't come off around the border this is if you don't mind paying for them. if your planning on doing this in the peak of the summer season then watch out around Perpignan as the Autoroute is only two lanes around the city and can usually be damn busy expect tail backs because it comes down from four to three and then two, (should you be traveling with a caravan watch out for the Wind here it can cause this part of the road to be closed to high sided and caravan traffic.) Also to be noted the coast road can also be a nightmare in the summer it is very windy and you get a lot of Camper vans etc plus all the bikers hacking around Hehe. But the view is loverly and the roads are better on the Spanish side of the coast road.
